Peter Albin Performing at Monterey Pop Festival

Color action shot of bassist Peter Albin performing on stage for Big Brother and the Holding Company at Monterey Pop Festival, circa 1967. Jill Gibson’s photographs from the 1967 Monterey International Pop Festival capture the spirit of a cultural turning point with striking intimacy. Across three days that launched the Summer of Love, her lens preserved both legendary performances—Janis Joplin’s breakout, Ravi Shankar’s transcendence, Jimi Hendrix’s fire, Brian Jones’s iconic presence—and the candid moments in the crowd that reflected the joy and experimentation of a generation. More than documentation, her images are vivid, emotional landmarks that continue to shape how we remember Monterey and the music revolution it embodied.
