Peruvian Opal Drift Necklace

Some stones carry geography in them. Peruvian opal is one — formed in the Andes from silica-rich water seeping through ancient volcanic rock, trapping the sky and the sea in mineral form. It doesn't flash like Australian opal. It drifts. Soft blues and greens move through translucent milky stone the way fog moves through a mountain pass, never quite settling, never quite the same twice. The Incas called opal the stone of the gods, and the deposits found in the copper-rich soils of the Andes produce a color palette unlike anything else on earth — cool aqua bleeding into seafoam, cloud-white dissolving into Caribbean blue. Unlike precious opals that demand play-of-color fireworks, Peruvian opal earns its beauty through quiet depth. You look into it rather than at it. Every stone is singular, shaped by the specific minerals and pressures of the exact place it formed, which means no two pieces of this necklace will ever be identical. That kind of geology deserves a setting that stays out of the way. The opal pendant hangs three-quarters of an inch from a sterling silver bail on an 18-inch sterling silver chain — a length that sits just below the collarbone, close enough to catch conversation, far enough to breathe. At 3 grams total, the weight is almost imperceptible, the kind of piece you put on in the morning and forget about until someone asks you where you got it. The sterling silver is hypoallergenic and nickel-free. Handcrafted in Atlanta, Georgia by Agape Gems.
