Peruvian Altum Angelfish / Pterophyllum scalare ’Rio Nanay’

Common Name: Peruvian Altum Angelfish Scientific Name: Pterophyllum scalare "Rio Nanay" Other Names: Rio Nanay Angelfish The Peruvian Altum Angelfish, a variant of Pterophyllum scalare from the Rio Nanay region in Peru, is a distinct and visually stunning freshwater fish. It is characterized by a tall, laterally compressed body and elongated fins. The base color is typically silver or pale gold, adorned with vertical black stripes. This variant is often appreciated for its heightened coloration, with some individuals exhibiting vibrant reds or oranges on the edges of their fins and body. Habitat and Distribution: Native to the Rio Nanay, a tributary of the Amazon River in Peru, this angelfish variant inhabits slow-moving, heavily vegetated waters that provide both ample food and shelter. Size and Lifespan: In a well-maintained aquarium, the Peruvian Altum Angelfish can reach sizes of 6-10 inches in height, including the fins. With proper care, their lifespan typically ranges from 8 to 12 years. Diet and Behavior: These angelfish are omnivorous and thrive on a diet that includes high-quality flakes or pellets, supplemented with frozen and live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They are generally peaceful but may show territorial behavior, particularly during breeding. Their elegant swimming and distinctive appearance make them popular among aquarists. Breeding and Reproduction: Breeding the Peruvian Altum Angelfish involves pair formation, with the pair laying eggs on a flat surface like a leaf or a piece of slate. The parents often guard and care for both the eggs and the resulting fry. Aquarium Care and Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended for a small group, with larger tanks needed for adult fish. The aquarium should offer plenty of swimming space and be decorated with plants, driftwood, or rocks to provide hiding spots. Maintaining high water quality through regular water changes is essential. Ideal Tank Mates: Suitable tank mates include larger tetras, peaceful barbs, dwarf cichlids, and certain catfish species. Avoid housing them with very small fish or fin-nipping species. Difficulty Level: Intermediate. They require a balanced diet and stable water conditions. Water Parameters: Temperature: 76-82°F (24-28°C) pH: 6.0-7.4 General Hardness (GH): 5-15 dGH Carbonate Hardness (KH): 3-8 dKH Ammonia: 0 ppm Nitrite: 0 ppm Nitrate: <20 ppm Additional Information: The Peruvian Altum Angelfish is often sought after for its beauty and resemblance to the more challenging true Altum Angelfish, Pterophyllum altum. Sensitive to water quality changes, these fish thrive best in a well-established aquarium with consistent water parameters. Their graceful presence adds an element of elegance to a community or species-specific aquarium.
