A pendulum squat is performed on a specialized pendulum squat machine designed to move along a fixed curved arc. Unlike free-weight squats, the machine guides your movement, keeping your posture controlled. It combines the mechanics of a squat and a leg press, making it different from traditional barbell squats. Many gyms also refer to it as pendulum squats when performed for multiple reps or sets. The pendulum machine uses a swinging arm mechanism that follows a pendulum-like path. Your back remains supported while your legs do most of the work. Weight plates are loaded onto the machine, which often makes it feel heavier than it looks. Advanced gyms and strength centers often feature both pendulum squat and pendulum leg press machines. Pendulum Squat vs Pendulum Leg Press  Pendulum Squat Pendulum Leg Press  Involve more hip and knee effort.  Has a seated or reclined position. Engage stabilizing muscles more actively. Focuses more on quadriceps with less core involvement. Feel closer to a real squat movement. Easier to control for pure leg strength. What Are Pendulum Squats Good For? It is building massive quadriceps development due to constant tension on the front thighs. which results in improving squat depth and knee strength. It helps in reducing lower-back stress compared to barbell squats. Enhances mind-muscle connection for leg workouts. The pendulum squats are ideal for hypertrophy (muscle growth) and help in increasing their visibility. It is great for athletes recovering from back fatigue but still wanting heavy leg training.  Pendulum Squat gym machine available with the True Iron Fitness  Atlantis Pendulum Squat Pro MODEL PW212 Atlantis Pendulum squat MODEL C212 Is a Pendulum Squat Harder Than a Regular Squat? Yes, in many cases pendulum squats feel harder than traditional squats. The reasons can be constant resistance throughout the movement, no momentum or “rest” at the top, and a fixed path that increases quadriceps engagement. Even experienced lifters often lift less weight than expected due to the machine’s mechanics, as it has a certain capacity; that’s why professional weightlifters prefer free-weight squats.  Why Are Pendulum Squats So Heavy? The pendulum squats are so heavy due to multiple reasons, like increased resistance at the bottom of the squat and muscles spending longer time under tension. Weight distribution and leverage make the load feel heavier than free weights. This is why even lighter plates can feel extremely challenging and heavier to lift. But for athletes, it is a great option to lift more weights; that is also the reason why it is preferred by professional weightlifters.  Is the Pendulum Squat Beginner-Friendly?
