Pearl Ring $32.00

These pearl rings feature genuine pearls—organic gems formed within the soft tissues of certain mollusks, primarily oysters and mussels. Pearls develop when layers of calcium carbonate (aragonite or calcite) are secreted around an irritant inside the mollusk, creating a lustrous, smooth surface prized in jewelry. Features: Formation: Pearls form biologically within mollusks as a defense mechanism, building concentric layers of calcium carbonate combined with a protein called conchiolin. Composition: Primarily composed of crystalline calcium carbonate in the form of aragonite or calcite, bound together by organic materials. Appearance: Typically round or near-round, with a smooth, iridescent surface called nacre or mother-of-pearl. Colors range from white and cream to pink, silver, or black depending on the species and environment. Physical Properties: Relatively soft for gemstones (Mohs hardness 2.5–4.5), requiring careful handling. Educational Value: Ideal for studying biomineralization, mollusk biology, and the unique organic-inorganic composite structure of pearls. Pearl rings combine natural biological processes with artistic design, offering a wearable example of Earth's living mineral formation.
