He was a gifted arranger, and respected proponent of the disco and "quiet storm" movements in mainstream urban music. Like fellow locals Marvin Gaye and Roberta Flack, Johnson helped erase the notion that good soul music couldn't be restrained and sophisticated. Thanks to skillful supporting musicians such as Bernard Purdie on drums, Leo Nocentelli from The Meters on guitar, and Terry Huff on the high harmonies, Johnson's debut album is an aural delight with soulful gems from start to finish. Gorgeously rendered replica edition of the Marina original LP, from P-Vine Records in Japan.
