Principal Buildings in Paris

This remarkable pictorial map captures Paris at one of the most dramatic moments in its history: the Siege of 1870-1871, when Prussian forces surrounded the French capital for over four months. The detailed bird's-eye view shows the city encircled by its defensive fortifications, with the ring of outer forts clearly marked and illustrated with small vignette views. From Fort de Nogent in the east to Mont Valérien in the west, each defensive position is depicted both cartographically and pictorially. The map demonstrates the sophisticated cartographic techniques of the period, combining precise geographic information with architectural illustration. Major landmarks within Paris are shown in elevated perspective, allowing viewers to identify Notre-Dame, the Panthéon, and other principal buildings. The Seine winds through the composition, with the Bois de Boulogne and Bois de Vincennes flanking the city. Railway lines, crucial for both supply and military movement, radiate outward from the capital. Published in English for British or American audiences, this map would have helped readers follow the daily dispatches from the besieged city that filled newspapers throughout the Western world.
