Paqui Anejo Tequila 750ML is a 100% blue Weber agave añejo tequila bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) from the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. Awarded 92 points by Wine Enthusiast, this pot-distilled expression is aged a full fourteen months in American whiskey casks, producing a layered character that stands out among añejos in its price tier. Quick Facts: ABV: 40% (80 proof)  |  Origin: Jalisco Highlands, Mexico  |  Aged 14 Months  |  Distillery: Autentica Tequilera (NOM 1502) Production & Heritage Paqui Añejo is produced at the Autentica Tequilera distillery (NOM 1502) in Jalisco using traditional copper pot stills rather than the more industrially common column stills. The agave plants are harvested at more than seven years of maturity, with sugar content measured at 25–26 brix — an indicator of fully ripened, flavor-dense piñas. A distinctive step in the process is the use of fresh wine yeast in fermentation, chosen over the airborne yeast typical in tequila production to ensure consistency and minimize off-flavors. During distillation, the master distiller isolates only the heart of the distillate, cutting away heads and tails to remove harshness. The spirit then rests for fourteen months in ex-American whiskey barrels, which impart the warm vanilla and butterscotch character that defines the finished tequila. Tasting Notes Aroma: Burnished gold in the glass, the nose opens with roasted bell pepper and cooked agave before giving way to oaky tannins, licorice, and clove. A sweet undercurrent of butterscotch pudding and custard rounds out the bouquet. Taste: The entry is silky and surprisingly light on the palate, leading with vanilla and butterscotch at the mid-palate. Hints of jalapeño, toasted coconut, and almond emerge as the liquid develops, adding savory complexity. An herbaceous quality — reminiscent of fresh oregano and thyme — weaves through the sweeter notes. Finish: Medium in length with a gentle sweetness and lingering oak. The herbal and roasted pepper notes fade slowly, leaving a clean, warm close. How to Drink Paqui Añejo The butterscotch richness and clean finish make this añejo an excellent sipper neat or with a single large ice cube to open up the herbal aromatics. It also holds its own in spirit-forward cocktails: Añejo Old Fashioned — The vanilla and oak backbone mirrors the classic bourbon base, while the agave and bell pepper add a savory twist. Tequila Manhattan — Paqui's butterscotch sweetness pairs naturally with sweet vermouth and a dash of mole bitters. Oaxacan Negroni — Substituting this añejo for the mezcal component brings a rounder, less smoky variation with warm spice and toasted coconut undertones. Paqui Añejo delivers a silky palate of vanilla, butterscotch, and toasted coconut layered over herbaceous notes of oregano and thyme. Roasted bell pepper and gentle oak give it a savory backbone that distinguishes it from sweeter añejos. How does Paqui Añejo compare to Don Julio Añejo? Both are 100% blue Weber agave añejos from the Jalisco highlands, but Don Julio Añejo is aged up to 18 months in American white oak while Paqui rests for 14 months in American whiskey casks. Paqui's use of fresh wine yeast and traditional pot stills tends to produce a lighter, more herbaceous profile, whereas Don Julio leans toward caramel and toasted oak richness. Is Paqui Añejo good for sipping neat? Yes — its 92-point Wine Enthusiast rating reflects a well-balanced, smooth añejo ideally suited to neat sipping. The clean finish and moderate 40% ABV make it approachable without sacrificing complexity. Where is Paqui Añejo made? Paqui Añejo is produced at the Autentica Tequilera distillery (NOM 1502) in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. The highland terroir is known for producing agave with higher sugar content and floral characteristics compared to lowland-grown plants. What foods pair well with Paqui Añejo? Grilled steak with chimichurri complements the herbaceous and roasted pepper notes. Dark chocolate or flan echoes the butterscotch and vanilla sweetness. Aged Manchego cheese mirrors the oaky complexity, while mole-sauced dishes align with the licorice and clove spice on the nose. What sizes does Paqui Añejo come in? Paqui Añejo is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle size. Is Paqui Añejo worth the price? Positioned in the mid-premium añejo tier, Paqui punches above its weight with a 92-point Wine Enthusiast score and small-batch pot-still production methods more commonly associated with higher-priced expressions. Why Paqui Añejo? The 92-point Wine Enthusiast rating is the clearest signal that this añejo delivers serious quality. What underpins that score is a production approach built around precision rather than scale: copper pot stills, wine yeast fermentation, aggressive cuts to isolate only the heart of the distillate, and agave harvested at seven-plus years of maturity with brix levels at 25–26. Fourteen months in American whiskey casks add warmth and structure without overwhelming the agave character. The result is an añejo that balances highland agave freshness with barrel-driven richness — an expression that earns its place among añejos costing considerably more.
