Heavy Metal Switchgrass

Panicum Heavy Metal, also known as Heavy Metal Switchgrass, is a striking ornamental grass that adds bold texture and color to any landscape. Known for its rigid, upright form and metallic-blue foliage, this warm-season grass creates a dramatic focal point in garden beds, borders, or mass plantings. In late summer, airy, pinkish-red seed heads emerge, adding a soft, delicate contrast to the strong vertical blades. As the season progresses, the foliage turns a golden-yellow, extending its interest well into fall and winter. Panicum Heavy Metal is a versatile and low-maintenance addition to gardens, thriving in both sunny and drought-prone areas. Reaching a height of 3 to 5 feet, Panicum Heavy Metal is perfect for adding vertical interest without taking up too much space. This native North American grass is highly adaptable to various soil types, including clay and sandy soils, as long as they are well-drained. It is also drought-tolerant and can thrive in tough conditions, making it ideal for xeriscaping or naturalized gardens. Hardy in zones 4-9, Heavy Metal Switchgrass, brings year-round beauty and structure to gardens, even standing tall in winter with its golden stalks and delicate seed heads catching the frost. Low-maintenance and deer-resistant, Panicum Heavy Metal requires little more than cutting back in late winter or early spring to make way for fresh new growth. It provides valuable habitat for birds, who enjoy the seeds during the colder months, and its dense root system makes it an excellent choice for erosion control. Panicum Heavy Metal delivers bold color, texture, and year-round interest to any garden, whether used as a standalone specimen or planted en masse.
