Pandora Leopard Plant

Pandora Leopard Plant (Ligularia dentata 'Pandora')Pandora Leopard Plant is a compact shade perennial that delivers dramatic dark foliage in a size that fits smaller gardens and containers. The glossy leaves add instant contrast in moist, low-light beds, making nearby greens look deeper and brighter flowers look cleaner. In summer, warm yellow to yellow-orange daisy-like blooms rise above the leaves to keep the planting lively when many shade plants slow down. If you can give it consistent moisture, it stays full, bold, and dependable year after year. Distinctive FeaturesThis cultivar forms a dense clump of rounded, saw-edged leaves with deep purple to green-purple tones and darker undersides, creating a rich, moody base layer. Branched stems in summer carry large, daisy-like flowers in golden yellow to yellow-orange held above the foliage for clear visibility. The habit is notably compact for a ligularia, typically about 12 to 16 inches tall in bloom and about 18 to 20 inches wide. It performs best in cool, moist conditions and can wilt quickly if allowed to dry, which makes moisture the key to success. Growing Conditions Sun: Part shade to full shade, with morning sun tolerated if soil stays consistently moist. Soil: Rich, humus-forward, well-drained soil that holds moisture, and it also tolerates heavier soils that stay evenly damp. Water: Medium to wet moisture, and do not allow the planting to dry out during summer. USDA Zones: USDA Zones 3 to 8. Mature Size: About 12 to 16 inches tall and about 18 to 20 inches wide. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a focal point in a shade bed where the dark foliage and summer blooms can anchor the planting in a compact footprint. Containers: Plant in large containers kept consistently moist for bold foliage contrast near patios and entries. Rain Garden: Place in rain garden edges and other moisture-retentive areas where it can stay hydrated. Pond Edge: Use near water features or low spots where soil stays evenly damp through summer. Front of Shade Border: Position at the front of shade beds for a dramatic leaf mass without overwhelming nearby plants. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Water deeply and consistently during warm weather to prevent wilting and leaf scorch. Mulch: Mulch with compost or leaf mold to conserve moisture and keep roots cooler in summer. Deadheading: Remove spent flower stems to keep the clump tidy and direct energy back to foliage. Pest Watch: Monitor for slugs and snails on new growth and manage early if damage appears. Cleanup: Cut back old foliage and stems in late winter to early spring before new growth begins. Why Choose Pandora Leopard Plant? Compact Drama: Dark glossy foliage delivers bold impact in a smaller, easier-to-place clump. Summer Color: Yellow to yellow-orange blooms lift shade plantings in summer when color can be scarce. Moist-Site Solution: Thrives in consistently damp soils where many perennials struggle to look their best. Container Ready: A strong choice for large pots when you can keep moisture steady. Deer Tolerance: Often considered deer resistant, though browsing can vary by location. If you want big-leaf impact without a big-leaf footprint, Pandora Leopard Plant is an excellent choice for moist shade. Keep the soil consistently damp and the plant will reward you with rich foliage and a bright summer bloom moment. It looks especially good repeated in small groups to create a continuous dark ribbon through the shade border.
