Palm Windmill

Windmill Palm, also known as the Chinese Windmill Palm, is a prized ornamental evergreen tree native to central and eastern China. Renowned as one of the most cold-tolerant true palms in the world, it allows gardeners in temperate climates to achieve a lush, tropical look far outside traditional tropical zones. The Windmill Palm grows as a single-trunked palm featuring a slim stem completely wrapped in a dense, dark brown, burlap-like fiber consisting of old leaf sheaths. At the top of the trunk sits a compact, symmetrical crown of stiff, fan-shaped (palmate) fronds (3 to 4 feet wide) on finely serrated petioles. The leaves radiate outward in a pinwheel fashion, giving the palm its common name. Typically the Windmill Palm reaches 10 to 20 feet tall in cultivated gardens (up to 30+ feet in optimal native conditions) with a compact canopy spread of 6 to 10 feet, making it ideal for tight spaces, patio plantings, or poolside accents. Scientific Name Trachycarpus fortunei (Windmill Palm / Chinese Windmill Palm) Foliage: Evergreen Leaves: Fan-shaped fronds, 3–4 ft wide; deep green to yellow-green, divided into stiff, narrow segments on finely serrated petioles (2–3 ft long) Flowers: Large, branching, bright yellow flower panicles (1–2 ft long) emerging from lower frond bases in late spring Fruit: FSmall, kidney-shaped drupes (approx. 0.5 inches); turn dark blue-purple to black with a waxy bloom in autumn Seeds: Hard, kidney-shaped single seed inside each dark blue-purple fruit Bark: Single unbranched trunk covered in a thick, dense, hairy layer of dark brown, burlap-like coarse fibrous leaf sheaths. Life Span: Perennial 70–100+ years Mature Height In Landscapes: 10–20 ft tall; In Native/Optimal Conditions: up to 30–40 ft tall Mature Width (Spread) 6–10 ft canopy spread Growth Rate Slow to Moderate (approx. 8–12 inches of trunk growth per year once established) USDA Zone / Chill Hours Zone 7b–11 (Exceptionally cold hardy down to 5°F to -10°F / -15°C to -23°C once mature); No chill hours required PLANT CARE & CHARACTERISTICS Light Requirements: Full Sun to Partial Shade (Tolerates full shade, though growth is slower; fronds remain broader in partial shade). Water Requirements: Moderate; needs regular moisture to establish, then highly adaptable to average moisture (prefers consistent watering in hot summers). Drought Resistance: Moderate to High once fully established; benefits from supplemental water during extended dry spells. Soil Type: Highly adaptable to sandy, loamy, or clay soils; prefers fertile, rich, well-draining soil; pH 5.5–7.5; dislikes waterlogged clay. Deer Resistance: High (Tough, fibrous fronds are rarely browsed by deer). Pest / Disease Resistance: High resistance to cold and common pests; susceptible to root rot in poorly draining, saturated soils and Palmetto Weevil in warm zones. Pollination: Dioecious (male and female flowers grow on separate trees); cross-pollination by wind and insects is required for female trees to produce fruit. Harvest: N/A (Ornamental palm; fruit is inedible for humans, though eaten by wild birds) Pruning: Very Low maintenance; prune only completely dead, brown lower fronds and old flower/fruit stalks. Do not trim yellowing fronds (they provide nutrients) or cut above the horizontal plane.
