Palm Sago

Sago Palm, also known as the Japanese Sago Cycad, is an ancient, slow-growing evergreen native to southern Japan (including the Ryukyu Islands). Despite its common name, it is not a true palm tree at all, but rather a cone-bearing cycad—a prehistoric plant family dating back over 200 million years. The Sago Palm features a formal, symmetrical rosette of stiff, arching feather-like fronds (2 to 4 feet long) radiating from a central growing point. The narrow leaflets are dark, glossy green with sharp tips and curled-under margins. Overall, the Palm Sago develops a stout, rough trunk covered in dark, textured leaf-base scars. It grows extremely slowly—often adding only 1 to 2 inches of trunk height per year—typically topping out at 3 to 10 feet tall in landscapes over decades. One important precaution to be aware of is that ALL parts of the plant—especially the seeds—contain the potent neurotoxin cycasin and are extremely poisonous to dogs, cats, livestock, and humans if ingested. Scientific Name Cycas revoluta (Sago Palm / Japanese Sago Cycad) (Note: Not a true palm tree, but an ancient, cone-bearing cycad) Foliage: Evergreen Dense, symmetrical rosette of stiff, arching feather-like (pinnate) fronds radiating from a central trunk.  Leaves: Feather-like fronds, 2–4 ft long; deep glossy green, composed of narrow, rigid, sharp-pointed leaflets with revolute (curled-under) margins Flowers: Non-flowering gymnosperm; produces large reproductive cones. Males produce upright golden cone-like strobili (1–2 ft long); females produce golden-felted central Megasporophyll structures Fruit: Non-fruiting (gymnosperm); female plants produce large, bright orange-to-red walnut-sized seeds nestled in the central crown Seeds: Large, hard-shelled, bright orange-red seeds (1.5–2 inches); Extremely toxic to humans, dogs, and pets if ingested Bark: Thick, rugged, dark brown-to-black cylindrical trunk covered with persistent, patterned leaf base scars Life Span: Perennial 100+ years Mature Height In Landscapes: 3–10 ft tall (takes decades to reach full height); In Native/Optimal Conditions: up to 15+ ft tall Mature Width (Spread) 3–6 ft spread Growth Rate Very Slow (often produces only one new flush of fronds per year) USDA Zone / Chill Hours Zones 8b–11 (Cold hardy down to 15°F to 20°F / -7°C to -9°C; fronds burn at ~15°F); No chill hours required PLANT CARE & CHARACTERISTICS Light Requirements: Bright Indirect Light to Full Sun (Thrives in partial shade or morning sun; direct afternoon sun in hot climates can yellow/burn fronds). Water Requirements: Low to Moderate; needs thorough watering, but soil must dry out almost completely between waterings. Drought Resistance: High once fully established. Soil Type: Extremely sensitive to overwatering; requires sharply draining, gritty, sandy, or loamy soil mix; pH 6.0–7.0. Deer Resistance: High (Rigid, sharp-pointed foliage and toxic secondary compounds prevent browsing). Pest / Disease Resistance: Susceptible to Cycad Aulacaspis Scale (Asian Cycad Scale) and mealybugs; highly vulnerable to root rot in waterlogged soils. Pollination: Dioecious (male and female cones grow on separate individual plants); wind-pollinated or insect-pollinated by specialized cycad beetles. Harvest: N/A (Ornamental cycad; All parts of the plant, especially seeds, are highly poisonous to humans and domestic animals due to cycasin toxins) Pruning: Very Low maintenance; prune only completely dead, brown, or yellowed lower fronds at the base. Do not trim healthy green fronds or cut the central growing point.
