Palace Purple Coral Bells

Palace Purple Coral Bells (Heuchera micrantha var. diversifolia 'Palace Purple')Palace Purple Coral Bells is a classic foliage perennial that brings rich color, fine texture, and dependable garden performance to borders, containers, and part-shade plantings through a long season. Its dark leaves help anchor mixed combinations and create strong contrast against chartreuse, silver, and green companions, giving the planting a more layered and intentional look. Because it forms a neat mound, it works especially well near the front of the border where the foliage can be appreciated up close. This variety remains a strong choice for gardeners who want a proven coral bells selection with broad landscape usefulness and reliable foliage interest. The leaf color can shift with heat and light, which gives it a more natural, dynamic look than some newer varieties with more fixed coloring. Airy flower stems add another layer of interest in late spring and early summer, but the foliage remains the main attraction through most of the growing season. Its long record of garden use also makes it easy to pair with woodland plants, edging perennials, and mixed containers. For plantings that need contrast, texture, and a dependable low mound, this selection continues to earn its place. Distinctive FeaturesPalace Purple Coral Bells forms a clump of maple-like to ivy-like leaves in deep purple, bronze-purple, or olive-bronze tones with dark wine-red to beet-red undersides. Foliage color often holds darkest in cooler conditions and may shift toward bronze-green in hotter summer weather. The leaf mound typically reaches about 12 inches tall and about 12 to 18 inches wide, while wiry dark red stems lift the flowers to about 15 to 24 inches in bloom. Tiny pinkish white to pale pink bell-shaped flowers appear from late spring into early summer and create a soft, airy contrast above the darker foliage. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to part shade is suitable, though part shade is often best in hotter regions to help maintain foliage quality. Soil: Organically rich, humusy, well-drained soil is ideal, but it adapts to average garden soil if drainage is reliable. Water: Medium to average moisture is best, with regular watering during establishment and avoidance of overly wet soil. Zones: USDA Zones 4 to 9 are the most consistently supported range for reliable performance. Habit: This plant grows in a clumping, mounded form with slender flower stems rising well above the foliage. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Its dark purple to bronze foliage makes it an effective focal point in small borders, decorative containers, and front-of-bed plantings. Borders: It works beautifully along the front of perennial borders where the darker leaves can define the planting edge and highlight brighter companions. Containers: The tidy mound and classic foliage color make it a strong choice for patio pots, entry planters, and mixed seasonal containers. Woodland Gardens: It fits naturally into woodland edges and part-shade plantings where dark foliage can add depth and year-long structure. Mass Planting: Planted in groups, it creates a broad sweep of dark foliage that adds unity and contrast to the landscape. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season, then provide supplemental moisture during extended dry weather as needed. Cleanup: Remove worn or winter-damaged foliage in early spring to refresh the clump and encourage clean new growth. Drainage: Avoid poorly drained sites because prolonged wetness around the crown can weaken the plant and reduce longevity. Deadheading: Cut back spent flower stems after bloom to keep the plant tidy and return attention to the foliage. Mulching: Apply a light mulch around the root zone to help conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature, but keep mulch away from the crown itself. Why Choose Palace Purple Coral Bells?
