Pair of Highland Cattle at the Loch Circa 1890–1915 Oil on canvas paintings

William Langley (1852–1922) Pair of Highland Cattle at the Loch Circa 1890–1915 Oil on canvas Sourced in England   A beautifully matched pair of late Victorian to early Edwardian oil paintings by listed British artist William Langley, known for his atmospheric Highland cattle scenes and romantic countryside compositions.   Each painting captures a quiet moment along a loch, with Highland cattle gathered at the water’s edge beneath soft, moody skies and layered mountain backdrops. Langley’s signature style is evident in both works, from the gentle handling of light to the restrained palette of earthy browns, mossy greens, and silvery blues that create depth and calm.   The compositions complement one another perfectly while maintaining subtle variation. One leans slightly warmer in tone, while the other carries a cooler, more muted atmosphere, allowing them to function as a true pair with visual balance and interest.   Both canvases are signed and retain period construction consistent with turn of the century English stretcher work. Langley’s works have appeared at major auction houses including Christie’s, and his Highland cattle scenes remain among his most desirable subjects.   Finding a single Langley is always special, but a cohesive pair like this is increasingly rare, especially sourced in England.   Condition Very good antique condition with light age appropriate wear Both canvases stable and well preserved Surface shows gentle patina consistent with age Frames display beautifully with expected wear   A refined and highly decorative pair of British pastoral paintings, offering both tranquility and presence.
