Pain and Providence

By Martin Cyril D'Arcy, S.J. Pain and Providence is, in form, a transcript of an intellectual society meeting to discuss the problem of evil and the existence of God; in spirit, it is a précis of the diverse viewpoints that men and women hold in regard to whether a good and loving God can allow, let alone actively will, the experience of pain and suffering. An excellent companion piece to C. S. Lewis’s The Problem of Pain in apologetics and G. K. Chesterton’s Man Who Was Thursday in literature, Pain and Providence is a captivating summation of Catholic teaching on evil and the existence of the God who is Love. “The providence of God is in its way as complicated as the eye and we go meddling with it in our desire to make a new universe with all we dislike left out and as a result, if we were allowed our way, there would be no universe at all.” –Martin Cyril D’Arcy, S.J. Martin Cyril D’Arcy (1888–1976) was a Roman Catholic priest of the Society of Jesus. A philosopher and professor, D’Arcy taught at Oxford University and Cornell University, Georgetown University and Gonzaga University, and the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University.
