Paeonia humilis is a single form, with a small flower that opens brilliant purple. One flower per stem. The flower head consists of one layer of petals, a large cluster of yellow stamens, and conspicuous carpels in center. Light purple filaments hold the pollen bearing stamens, the stigmas are pale purplish red. Broad, rounded petals overlap, forming a shallow cup. The paeonia humilis flower is up facing and opens fully upon maturity, petals nearly recurving, before petals drop. Satisfactory plant habit, the short stems hold flowers near the foliage canopy. The dwarf to semi-dwarf bush forms a compact mound. The foliage is of a gray green color and typically dies back in early summer. This early flowering species selection is a good food source for pollinators and makes for an unusual focal point in the near border. Awards, Best Use & Distinction General garden and landscape use; perennial border; deer resistant. Basic Growing Requirements Full Sun. Water as needed, sensitive to overwintering and waterlogged conditions. Soil pH 6.5-7. Fertile, well-draining soil.
