Orange Spot Filefish - Fiji

Oxymonacanthus longirostris The Orange Spot Filefish also known as the Harlequin Filefish or Longnose Filefish, is a graceful and uniquely patterned species admired for its beauty and specialized feeding habits. It features a slender, elongated body marked with bright orange spots over a turquoise to greenish background, along with a pointed snout adapted for feeding on coral polyps. This striking coloration and delicate form make it one of the most distinctive filefish found on coral reefs. The Orange Spot Filefish is known for its obligate relationship with Acropora corals, feeding primarily on their polyps in the wild. Because of this specialized diet, it is considered a challenging species to maintain in captivity. While some individuals can adapt to eating enriched frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood, most require a constant supply of live coral to survive. Advanced aquarists with mature reef systems and a consistent coral population are best suited to keeping this species. They are generally peaceful but should be housed with calm tankmates in an environment rich with live rock and hiding places. Due to their feeding behavior, the Orange Spot Filefish is not reef-safe, as it may nip or consume corals in mixed reef aquariums. A secure, stress-free environment and pristine water conditions are essential for their health. Reaching an adult size of about 4.5 inches, this filefish thrives in well-established aquariums with gentle water flow and stable coral colonies. In the wild, Oxymonacanthus longirostris inhabits shallow coral reefs across the Indo-Pacific—from the Red Sea and East Africa to Australia and Samoa—where pairs or small groups can often be seen weaving through Acropora branches in search of food.
