The Owari Satsuma is the most cold-hardy mandarin available, tolerating temperatures down to approximately 15°F (–9°C) once established. Zones 4–7 (Container Growing): Grow in a large pot (15–25 gallon) and move indoors or to a frost-free space during winter months. A sunny window or grow light keeps it thriving. Sunlight: Full sun — at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily for best fruit production. Watering: Deep, infrequent watering. Allow the top 2–3 inches of soil to dry between waterings. Avoid waterlogged roots. Soil: Well-draining, slightly acidic soil (pH 6.0–7.0). Raised beds and containers with citrus-specific mix work great. Fertilizing: Feed with a citrus-formulated fertilizer in spring, summer, and early fall. Avoid fertilizing in late fall or winter. Harvest Window: October through December — one of the earliest-ripening citrus varieties available. Pair It With Another Citrus Favorite Love citrus variety?
