Othonna capensis - Ruby Necklace

Othonna capensis 'Ruby Necklace' is an attractive and unique succulent plant, often admired for its colorful foliage and daisy-like flowers. Below are detailed descriptions of its morphological characteristics, growth habits, maintenance points, and reproduction methods: Morphological Characteristics Stems: The 'Ruby Necklace' has trailing, slender stems that can grow several feet long. These stems are typically deep purple to ruby-red, which become more pronounced under bright sunlight. Leaves: The leaves are fleshy, bean-shaped, and glossy. They attach alternately along the stem and are a vibrant green to purple color, further intensifying to a deep ruby red in full sun. Flowers: This plant blooms with small, bright yellow, daisy-like flowers that contrast beautifully against the dark foliage. The flowers usually appear in late winter to spring, emerging at the tips of the stems. Growth Habits Light: 'Ruby Necklace' thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. The color of the stems and leaves deepens with more exposure to light. Direct, harsh sunlight might scorch the leaves, so filtered light is optimal. Temperature: It prefers warm, dry conditions typical of its native South African environment. It is not frost-hardy and needs protection from temperatures below freezing. Water: This succulent requires minimal watering, adhering to the "soak and dry" method. Water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry, and then allow it to dry out completely before watering again. Maintenance Points Soil: A well-draining succulent or cactus mix is essential to prevent root rot. Adding perlite or sand can improve drainage. Potting: Choose a pot with ample drainage holes to allow excess water to escape, which is crucial for the health of the plant. Fertilizer: Feed with a diluted low-nitrogen succulent fertilizer during the growing season to support growth and flowering, but avoid over-fertilization. Reproduction Method Propagation: 'Ruby Necklace' can be easily propagated from both cuttings and seeds. Cuttings: Take stem cuttings during the warmer months, let them dry for a day or two to form a callus, then plant in well-draining soil. Water sparingly until roots develop. Seeds: Sow seeds in a well-draining soil mix, cover lightly with soil, and keep moist in a warm, bright environment. Germination can take several weeks. Othonna capensis 'Ruby Necklace' is an excellent choice for hanging baskets or as a part of a succulent display where its colorful trailing stems can be shown off. With minimal care, it can be a stunning addition to any succulent collection or home garden.
