Othello Leopard Plant

Othello Leopard Plant (Ligularia dentata 'Othello')Othello Leopard Plant is a bold shade perennial that brings dramatic foliage and late-summer color to moist garden spaces. Its large, rounded leaves add instant structure, making shady borders feel fuller and more designed from the start. When the flowers arrive, yellow-orange daisy-like blooms rise above the dark foliage and brighten the planting at a time when many shade perennials slow down. If you have a consistently moist spot, this plant delivers a strong, dependable presence year after year. Distinctive FeaturesThis cultivar is prized for big, saw-edged leaves that emerge with deep purple tones, then mature to dark green on top with rich purple undersides and darker stems. In midsummer to late summer, branched flower stems carry clusters of yellow-orange, daisy-like blooms held above the foliage for clear visibility. The habit is clump-forming and upright, creating a substantial mound that reads as a foliage anchor even between bloom flushes. It performs best where soil stays consistently moist, and it can tolerate heavier soils better than many ornamental perennials. Growing Conditions Sun: Part shade to full shade for best foliage quality, with morning sun tolerated if soil stays consistently moist. Soil: Rich, humus-forward, well-drained soil is ideal, and it also performs well in heavier soils that hold moisture. Water: Medium to wet moisture, and do not allow the planting to dry out during summer. USDA Zones: USDA Zones 3 to 8. Mature Size: About 2 to 3 feet tall and about 1.5 to 2.5 feet wide. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a focal point in a shade bed where the bold leaves and late-season flowers can anchor the entire planting. Rain Garden: Plant in rain gardens or consistently moist areas where its moisture tolerance keeps it looking full. Pond Edge: Place near water features or low spots where soil stays evenly damp through summer. Back of Shade Border: Use toward the back of a shade border to create height and a strong foliage backdrop. Woodland Garden: Combine with ferns and other shade perennials for layered texture and late-season color. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Water deeply during dry spells to prevent wilting and keep foliage looking clean. Mulch: Mulch to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature, especially in warmer exposures. Deadheading: Remove spent flower stems to keep the clump tidy and focus energy on foliage. Pest Watch: Watch for slugs and snails, especially on new growth, and manage early if damage appears. Cleanup: Cut back old foliage and stems in late winter to early spring before new growth begins. Why Choose Othello Leopard Plant? Bold Foliage: Oversized leaves and dark undersides add instant structure and high contrast in shade. Late-Season Bloom: Yellow-orange flowers bring a strong color lift in midsummer to late summer. Moisture Tolerance: Thrives in consistently moist soils where many perennials struggle to look their best. Shade Performance: Reliable growth in part shade to shade helps fill difficult low-light spaces. Design Impact: Large-leaf texture pairs well with fine foliage plants to create a more layered, finished look. If you want a shade perennial with real presence, Othello Leopard Plant delivers with foliage that reads bold all season and flowers that brighten the garden when it matters most. Give it consistent moisture and a sheltered, lower-light spot, and it will reward you with a strong clump that improves each year. It is especially effective when planted in small groups to create a repeating, dramatic leaf mass through the shade border.
