Ostrich Plume Astilbe

Ostrich Plume Astilbe (Astilbe thunbergii 'Ostrich Plume')Ostrich Plume Astilbe is a graceful shade perennial valued for tall arching plumes, soft pink color, and elegant movement in moist garden spaces. It is also sold as Straussenfeder Astilbe, a name that reflects the long, feather-like flower panicles that bend and drape more noticeably than many upright astilbes. Dark green, fern-like foliage forms a lush clump below the flowers and gives shaded plantings texture before and after bloom. With organic-rich soil, steady moisture, and part shade to full shade, Ostrich Plume Astilbe brings romantic height and soft structure to woodland gardens, shaded borders, water feature edges, and cut flower plantings. Distinctive FeaturesOstrich Plume Astilbe produces large, open, arching pink plumes that droop softly from tall stems, giving the plant a looser and more flowing look than many dense, upright astilbes. The flower heads have a feathery texture and create gentle movement above deeply cut green foliage. New foliage may show subtle bronze tinting before maturing to green, adding a touch of early-season interest. Its taller, cascading bloom habit makes it especially useful where a shade planting needs height, softness, and a natural woodland feel. Growing Conditions Sun: Grows best in part shade to full shade, with morning sun tolerated where soil stays consistently moist. Soil: Prefers fertile, humusy, organically rich, moist, well-drained soil and also suits damp garden sites that do not stay stagnant. Water: Keep soil evenly moist for best foliage and flowering, especially during heat, drought, or the first growing season. USDA Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 4 to 8. Mature Size: Typically reaches 24 to 36 inches tall in bloom and 12 to 24 inches wide. Habit: Forms a tall, upright, clump-forming herbaceous perennial with arching to slightly weeping flower plumes. Foliage: Features deeply cut dark green, fern-like foliage that creates a lush textured mound. Flower Color: Produces pink to rosy-pink plumes with a soft, feathery appearance. Bloom Season: Blooms in early summer to midsummer, often around June to July depending on climate. Fruit: Not grown for ornamental fruit, though dried flower heads can provide subtle late-season texture. Deer Resistance: Astilbe is generally resistant to deer and rabbits, though browsing can vary with local pressure. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Plant where the tall arching plumes can cascade above lower shade companions and draw the eye. Shade Borders: Use in the middle or back of shaded borders and foundation beds for height, softness, and refined color. Woodland Gardens: Pair with hostas, ferns, brunnera, ligularia, heuchera, hellebores, and other moisture-loving shade perennials. Water Features: Grow near ponds, streams, rain garden edges, or damp borders where soil stays moist but drains well. Mass Planting: Plant in groups for a fuller sweep of soft pink plumes and graceful movement in moist shade. Cut Flowers: Harvest the long plumes for fresh arrangements or leave dried stems standing for seasonal texture. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Water regularly and deeply so the root zone remains evenly moist through active growth and bloom. Mulch: Apply organic mulch to conserve moisture, cool the root zone, and reduce stress during hot weather. Soil Care: Add compost or leaf mold to maintain rich soil and support the tall stems and full flower plumes. Deadheading: Remove faded plumes for a cleaner look, or leave them standing for a loose dried texture after bloom. Division: Divide mature clumps every 3 to 4 years if growth becomes crowded or flower production declines. Pruning: Cut back old foliage in late winter or early spring before new shoots appear. Heat Care: Provide afternoon shade and extra moisture during hot dry periods to help prevent browning foliage edges. Why Choose Ostrich Plume Astilbe? Arching Plumes: Long pink flower panicles drape gracefully and add movement to shaded gardens. Tall Soft Texture: The upright stems and weeping plumes bring height without a stiff or formal look. Woodland Character: Fern-like foliage and loose flowers blend beautifully into naturalistic shade plantings. Moisture-Loving Performance: It thrives in rich, consistently moist soil near shaded borders, woodland paths, and water features. Cut Flower Value: The large feather-like plumes are useful fresh in arrangements and attractive as dried stems. Ostrich Plume Astilbe is an excellent choice for gardeners who want soft pink flowers, graceful height, and natural movement in moist shade. Its arching plumes, fern-like foliage, and elegant clumping habit make it a memorable option for woodland edges, shaded borders, water feature plantings, and romantic perennial combinations.
