The term "Orthoceras egg" is a bit of a misnomer — Orthoceras did not lay fossilized eggs that we know of, and no fossilized cephalopod eggs from Orthoceras have ever been scientifically confirmed. However, in the fossil and rock shop world, the term "Orthoceras egg" usually refers to a decorative item crafted from stone containing Orthoceras fossils. What Is an "Orthoceras Egg"? Feature Description Not a real egg It's a carved and polished stone object shaped like an egg, made from fossil-rich rock containing Orthoceras (and sometimes ammonite) fossils. Material Typically made from black marble or limestone that contains naturally embedded Orthoceras fossils. Fossils inside Real fossilized Orthoceras shells, visible as white or gray tapered shapes within the polished stone. Common Size Usually ranges from 2" to 6" tall (about 5–15 cm). Purpose Decorative, collectible, or used in metaphysical contexts (though not scientifically supported). Where Are They Made? Most “Orthoceras eggs” are made in Morocco, which has abundant fossil beds full of Orthoceras and ammonite specimens. Skilled artisans there cut, shape, and polish the fossil-rich stone into egg shapes, spheres, pyramids, and other decorative items. Value & Collecting Aspect Details Cost Typically ranges from $10 to $50, depending on size, polish, and quality of visible fossils. Use Display pieces, desk décor, gifts, or metaphysical tools.
