Ormeau bottle tree ‘Brachychiton sp. Ormeau’

T he Ormeau Bottle Tree, botanically known as Brachychiton sp. Ormeau, is a rare hybrid Australian tree best known for its distinctive bottle-shaped trunk, attractive green foliage, and unusual greenish-white flowers. This striking tree becomes increasingly impressive with age as its trunk develops its characteristic swollen shape, making it a standout specimen plant for warm-climate landscapes and collections. It is also one of Australia’s rarest trees, which adds to its appeal among plant enthusiasts and collectors.  Native to southeastern Queensland, Australia, young plants have attractive, deeply divided foliage and colorful new growth, while older trees develop broader, glossy leaves and a pronounced bottle-like trunk. Mature trees can grow up to around 50 to 80 feet tall in favorable conditions, although cultivated specimens may remain considerably smaller depending on growing conditions. The Ormeau Bottle Tree produces clusters of greenish-white, bell-shaped flowers, usually toward the ends of its branches. The flowers add seasonal interest and provide nectar and pollen that can attract native insects and other flower-visiting wildlife. After flowering, the tree may produce brown, boat-shaped seed pods containing bright yellow seeds, although mature trees do not necessarily produce seeds every year. For the best growth, plant this Bottle Tree in well-drained succulent  soil that does not remain soggy after watering. Young plants benefit from regular watering while they establish, but allow the soil to dry somewhat between waterings rather than keeping it constantly moist. Once established, the tree has good drought tolerance and generally needs less supplemental water. It prefers warm temperatures and plenty of bright light, so it is best grown outdoors in approximately USDA Zones 9–11 in a full-sun location. Container-grown young plants can be kept indoors temporarily near a bright south- or west-facing window, but they will eventually need more space and direct sunlight than most indoor environments can provide. Protect young plants from frost and prolonged cold temperatures. Average household humidity is generally sufficient indoors, while outdoor plants typically require additional humidity.  The Bottom Line Overall, the Ormeau Bottle Tree is a truly special addition to a plant collection because of its dramatic bottle-shaped trunk, changing foliage, seasonal flowers, and exceptional rarity. It can live for many decades and may eventually become an impressive specimen tree when given enough space, sunlight, and well-drained soil. For gardeners looking for an unusual Australian native with conservation significance and plenty of character, the Ormeau Bottle Tree is a fascinating choice.  Related Product Queensland Bottle Tree 'Brachychiton rupestris' If you love unusual Australian trees, you can also explore and learn more about our Queensland Bottle Tree (Brachychiton rupestris), another striking species known for its distinctive bottle-shaped trunk and drought-tolerant nature.
