Urad Dal is also known as Black Gram. It has its origins in ancient India where it was first cultivated and has remained a staple ever since. It’s a main ingredient in many famous Indian dishes including Dosas, Idli, Papadums and Dal Makhani. Urad Dal is sold as either a “black lentil” which is usually the whole bean, or a “white lentil” which has the black skins removed to reveal a creamy white interior. Urad Dal is a very nutritious bean, containing plant protein, fiber, low-glycemic carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Our Certified Organic Urad Dal is split and husked so the skins are removed. The flavor is mildly earthy and slightly sweet.
