Orange Skipper Coneflower

Orange Skipper Coneflower (Echinacea hybrid 'Orange Skipper')Orange Skipper Coneflower brings bright tangerine-orange color to sunny gardens on a compact, sturdy plant that fits easily into borders, containers, and pollinator plantings. Its shorter, well-branched habit makes it especially useful where strong summer color is needed without the height of larger coneflower varieties. This selection offers the toughness and long bloom season gardeners expect from echinacea while adding a vivid orange tone that energizes mixed perennial combinations. It is a dependable choice for adding lasting color, wildlife value, and a tidy structure to sunny landscapes. Distinctive FeaturesThis hybrid coneflower produces single, neon tangerine-orange flowers with prominent darker central cones, creating a bright and cheerful display through the warm season. The blooms are held on strong, well-branched stems above green foliage, giving the plant a full and balanced appearance without becoming oversized. It typically matures about 15 to 18 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide, forming a compact clump with sturdy garden presence. Bloom usually begins in early to midsummer and continues into early fall, with flowers appearing over a long stretch of the season. Growing Conditions Sun: Plant in full sun for best flowering, strongest stems, and the most compact habit. Soil: Grow in average to moderately fertile, well-drained soil and avoid poorly drained or consistently wet planting sites. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide low to moderate water, allowing the soil to dry somewhat between waterings. Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 5 to 9. Habit: This variety has a compact, clump-forming habit with excellent branching and sturdy flowering stems. Bloom Season: Expect flowering from early summer into early fall, with the heaviest display through summer. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use its vivid tangerine-orange flowers as a focal point in sunny borders where warm color can lift and anchor surrounding plant combinations. Front of Border: Place it near the front of perennial beds where its compact size and bright flowers can be appreciated up close. Containers: Grow it in large patio containers for a bold, manageable display with strong seasonal impact. Pollinator Gardens: Add it to butterfly and pollinator plantings to support bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects through the growing season. Mass Planting: Group several plants together for a more concentrated block of orange color in sunny landscape beds. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during the first growing season, then water mainly during extended dry periods once established. Deadheading: Remove faded flowers to encourage continued bloom and keep the plant looking tidy through the season. Feeding: Apply compost or only light fertilizer in spring, since overly rich soil can reduce the plant's sturdy, compact growth. Cleanup: Cut stems back in late fall or late winter, or leave some seed heads standing briefly for added texture and bird interest. Drainage: Make sure the planting area drains well, especially through winter, to support long-term vigor and return. Why Choose Orange Skipper Coneflower? Bright Orange Color: Its tangerine-orange blooms bring a clear, energetic color that stands out strongly in summer plantings. Compact Habit: The shorter, fuller form fits easily into smaller beds, front-of-border positions, and decorative containers. Long Blooming: It flowers over many weeks, helping keep sunny gardens colorful well beyond early summer. Pollinator Appeal: The blooms attract butterflies, bees, and other beneficial visitors to the garden.
