A Speedmaster with a Japanese connection The Speedmaster's history began in 1957, when Omega introduced a chronograph designed for motorsport. Its tachymeter bezel and highly legible dial later became part of one of watchmaking's most celebrated stories through the Speedmaster's association with NASA's space missions. But the Speedmaster's history extends far beyond the Moonwatch. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, Omega produced distinctive variations for the Japanese market, including special editions associated with Marui, the Japanese department-store retailer. Reference 3513.51 is one of those watches. Its black dial features three contrasting silver chronograph registers, creating a reverse-panda appearance that distinguishes it from the standard black-dial Speedmaster Date, reference 3513.50. Unlike the manually wound Moonwatch, this 39 mm Speedmaster features an automatic movement, a date display and more compact proportions. It combines the recognizable character of Omega's racing chronographs with the distinctive appeal of a Japanese-market special edition.
