Old Scout Single Cask Rye 2015

Experience the legendary Smooth Ambler Old Scout Rye, a 9-year-old single barrel masterpiece bottled at a commanding 126.6 proof. This 2015 release offers an unparalleled journey of bold rye spice, rich sweetness, and refined oak development. A must-have for the discerning whiskey connoisseur seeking an authentic, powerhouse rye experience. Tasting Notes Nose: A captivating and assertive nose, immediately announcing its Rye heritage with a burst of fresh crushed mint, dill, and black pepper. Underlying these bold rye spices are nuanced layers of sweet caramel, vanilla bean, and toasted oak, hinting at its extended age. A delicate floral note, like dried rose petals, and a touch of orchard fruit (baked apple, pear) emerge with aeration, adding complexity and refinement. The high proof is present but well-integrated, suggesting a robust experience without being overpowering. Palate: The first sip delivers an explosion of flavor, true to its cask strength. The rye spice is dominant yet exquisitely balanced, offering a surge of cinnamon, clove, and anise, swiftly followed by a rich, oily sweetness. Vanilla custard, dark brown sugar, and a hint of dark chocolate intertwine with robust oak character and a pleasant, leathery undertone. A vibrant zest of orange peel and a subtle nuttiness (almond, walnut) add further depth. The texture is full-bodied and viscous, coating the palate luxuriously. Finish: Long, warming, and remarkably complex. The rye spice lingers gracefully, evolving into a pleasant menthol coolness and a consistent crackle of black pepper. The sweetness evolves into a lingering, dark caramel and well-charred oak, with a trace of espresso and baking cocoa. The extensive age is evident in the polished tannic structure, providing a beautiful dryness at the very end that invites another sip. The high proof provides a prolonged, satisfying heat that slowly fades, leaving echoes of the initial spice and sweetness. About the Distillery Smooth Ambler, established in 2009 in Maxwellton, West Virginia, gained significant acclaim for its exceptional sourced whiskey. Their 'Old Scout' line, particularly the single barrel rye offerings, became legendary for showcasing the quality of aged whiskies they carefully selected and bottled at cask strength, long before constructing their own distilling operations.
