Old Forester Single Barrel Rye 750ML

Old Forester Single Barrel Rye 750ML is an unfiltered, barrel-strength Kentucky straight rye whiskey bottled at approximately 128–131 proof (64–65.5% ABV) in a 750ml bottle. This expression marks the first-ever barrel-proof rye released in Old Forester's 150-plus-year history, built on a grain-forward 65% rye mashbill that delivers exceptional intensity and complexity straight from the cask. Quick Facts: ABV: ~64–65.5% (varies by barrel)  |  Origin: Louisville, Kentucky, USA  |  Barrel Proof, Single Barrel  |  Distillery: Old Forester Distilling Company Production & Heritage Old Forester Distilling Company operates from its home on Louisville's historic Whiskey Row, a site deeply rooted in the brand's founding as America's first bottled bourbon. The Single Barrel Rye uses a mashbill of 65% rye, 20% malted barley, and 15% corn — a notably rye-heavy grain bill complemented by an unusually high proportion of malted barley, which contributes body and a creamy texture rare among Kentucky ryes. Each bottle is drawn from an individual barrel and left unfiltered at cask strength, meaning proof varies from barrel to barrel. Fans had petitioned for a barrel-proof rye ever since Old Forester debuted its standard 100-proof rye in 2019, and this release answered that call. Tasting Notes Aroma: Rich brown sugar and magnolia blossom open the nose, followed by soft sassafras and candied lemon. The high proof amplifies these aromatics without overwhelming them, revealing deeper layers of caramel and hazelnut with time in the glass. Taste: Sharp black pepper and cinnamon stick ignite the entry, establishing the rye's spice-forward character immediately. The mid-palate shifts to creamy vanilla and lemon custard, layered with dark brown sugar and ripe orchard fruit. Dried dill and baked apple emerge as the whiskey opens up, adding savory complexity against a full-bodied, almost dessert-like backbone. Finish: Allspice and peppercorn introduce a long, dry finish that builds with notes of pine, anise, and bright lemon zest. The lack of filtration preserves a thick, oily texture that carries these flavors well past the final sip. How to Drink Old Forester Single Barrel Rye At barrel proof, this rye rewards a slow approach — pour it neat and let it sit for five to ten minutes, then add a few drops of water to unlock the sweeter custard and fruit notes beneath the spice. The high proof and bold profile also make it an exceptional cocktail backbone. A Manhattan gains serious depth from the rye's brown sugar sweetness and cinnamon spice, standing up to sweet vermouth without disappearing. A Sazerac benefits from the intense black pepper and anise notes, which amplify the cocktail's traditional herbal character. A Vieux Carré lets the rye's dessert-forward qualities harmonize with Cognac and Bénédictine for a rich, layered drink. Russell's Reserve Single Barrel Rye is bottled at a fixed 104 proof (52% ABV) and uses the Wild Turkey distillery's lower-rye mashbill, resulting in a more approachable, grain-forward profile. Old Forester's version is significantly higher in proof, unfiltered, and built on a 65% rye mashbill, making it bolder, spicier, and more variable from barrel to barrel. Is Old Forester Single Barrel Rye good for sipping neat? Yes, though its barrel-proof strength (approximately 128–131 proof) means a few drops of water can help open up the sweeter, more nuanced layers beneath the initial spice hit. Experienced cask-strength drinkers will find it rewarding without any dilution. Where is Old Forester Single Barrel Rye made? It is distilled and bottled at the Old Forester Distilling Company on Whiskey Row in Louisville, Kentucky. Louisville sits in the heart of Kentucky's bourbon and rye production region. What foods pair well with Old Forester Single Barrel Rye? Smoked brisket complements the whiskey's peppery spice and brown sugar sweetness. Dark chocolate truffles echo the caramel and vanilla notes. Sharp aged cheddar plays against the rye's dill and baking spice. Pecan pie mirrors the dessert-forward mid-palate. Charcuterie with fennel salami highlights the anise on the finish. It positions as a premium barrel-proof single barrel rye, competing in a category where unfiltered cask-strength releases from major heritage distilleries command respect. The barrel-to-barrel variation and the distinction of being Old Forester's first-ever barrel-proof rye add collectibility and value within this tier. Why Old Forester Single Barrel Rye? This is a milestone release — the first barrel-proof rye whiskey from a distillery with more than 150 years of continuous production history. The 65% rye and 20% malted barley mashbill is distinctive among Kentucky ryes, delivering a combination of aggressive spice and creamy body that sets it apart from lower-rye competitors. Because each bottle comes from a single barrel and is bottled unfiltered at whatever proof that barrel reached, no two bottles are identical, rewarding repeat exploration. For rye enthusiasts who felt the standard 100-proof expression hinted at untapped potential, this cask-strength version delivers on that promise with uncompromising intensity.
