Odora Goldenrod

Odora Goldenrod, commonly known as Sweet Goldenrod or Anise-Scented Goldenrod, is a graceful native perennial valued for its aromatic foliage and brilliant golden-yellow flowers. When crushed, the narrow green leaves release a distinctive anise-like fragrance that sets this species apart from other goldenrods. Loose, arching clusters of small yellow flowers appear along the upper stems from late summer into fall, creating a bright display at a time when many summer-blooming perennials are fading. Its upright habit and fine-textured foliage give the plant a light, natural appearance that works especially well in native and informal garden settings. Growing approximately 2′ – 4′ (ft) tall with a spread of 1′ – 2′ (ft), Odora Goldenrod forms an upright clump that adds height without becoming overly bulky. Its slender form makes it easy to weave through mixed perennial borders, while groups of plants create an eye-catching sweep of late-season yellow. It is well suited to sunny native gardens and naturalistic plantings, where its airy habit combines beautifully with asters, ornamental grasses, and other fall-blooming perennials. The fragrant foliage also adds another sensory element to the garden beyond its ornamental flowers. Odora Goldenrod grows best in full sun and average to dry, well-drained soil. It adapts particularly well to sandy and loamy soils and tolerates drought once established. Water regularly while newly planted to encourage a strong root system, then provide supplemental water only during extended dry periods. Fertilization is generally unnecessary in average garden soil, and excessive feeding can encourage weak, overly lush growth. Cut back old stems in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges, and provide adequate spacing to maintain good air circulation. Care Instructions Planting: Plant in full sun with room for its upright, naturally clumping habit. Soil: Average to dry, well-drained sandy or loamy soil. Watering: Water regularly during establishment; provide supplemental water during prolonged dry periods. Fertilizing: Fertilization is generally unnecessary in average garden soil. Pruning: Cut back old stems in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. Spacing:  Plant 1′ – 2′ (ft) apart. Maintenance: Cut back old growth before new spring growth begins, remove unwanted seedlings if they appear, and divide established clumps if they become overcrowded or need rejuvenation. Odora Goldenrod offers more than dependable late-season color. Its fragrant foliage, drought tolerance, and valuable pollinator appeal make it a distinctive choice for sunny landscapes. The flowers provide nectar and pollen for Honeybees, butterflies, and other pollinators, while the mature seed heads can provide food for birds. As a Maryland native, it is well suited to regional landscapes and brings a natural, relaxed character to mixed borders and larger plantings. Whether used for its aromatic foliage, golden fall flowers, or wildlife value, Odora Goldenrod delivers multiple seasons of interest with straightforward care.
