Odessa Barb

Odessa Barb (Pethia padamya)   The Odessa Barb (Pethia padamya) is a highly sought-after freshwater fish celebrated for its incredible coloration and lively activity. Unlike many other barbs, which feature bands or spots, the Odessa Barb is instantly recognizable by the broad, vivid ruby-red horizontal stripe that runs from behind the gill cover to the base of the tail fin. This stripe is almost fluorescent and becomes exceptionally intense in healthy, mature males, especially when displaying for females or establishing dominance. Appearance and Personality Coloration: The body is primarily a metallic silver or brassy olive-green color, contrasting sharply with the signature crimson stripe. Mature males develop an overall deep, rosy blush on their flanks and face. The fins are typically clear or lightly blushed with red. Size: They remain relatively small, reaching about 2 inches (5 cm) in length. Temperament: They are active, fast-swimming, and generally peaceful schooling fish, making them a great addition to a community tank. However, they are barbs, so they have a tendency to be fin-nippers if kept singly or in too small a group. Keeping them in a large school (8 or more) is crucial—this channels their nipping behavior toward each other in playful hierarchy disputes rather than targeting slower, long-finned tank mates. Habitat and Care Natural Habitat: They originate from clear, fast-flowing streams in Myanmar (Burma). Tank Requirements: They require plenty of open swimming space as they are constantly on the move, combined with areas of dense planting and driftwood to provide shelter and security. Diet: As an omnivore, they readily accept high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms, which are essential for maintaining their bright colors. The Odessa Barb is an excellent choice for an experienced or intermediate hobbyist looking for a resilient, beautiful, and engaging fish to add movement and color to a planted aquarium.
