Oakhurst Pineapple Lily

Oakhurst Pineapple Lily (Eucomis comosa 'Oakhurst')Oakhurst Pineapple Lily brings a tropical, architectural look to summer containers and sunny borders with deep burgundy foliage and dramatic flower spikes. The bold leaves create instant contrast, then the plant finishes with pineapple-like blooms that hold attention for weeks. It thrives in heat and looks especially sharp in modern, high-contrast plantings where foliage matters as much as flowers. In colder climates, it is easy to enjoy as a summer bulb in pots and overwinter dry and frost-free. Distinctive FeaturesThis selection is known for strap-like, red-purple foliage and stout, upright stems topped with a tufted, pineapple-style bloom head. Flower spikes rise above the leaves in midsummer to late summer, with darker buds and bracts opening to softer pink to creamy tones for a layered color effect. The habit is clump-forming and upright, typically reaching about 24 inches tall with flowers rising to roughly 32 inches, and spreading about 20 inches wide. The plant reads as clean and sculptural from a distance, while the bloom details reward a closer look. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to part shade, with best foliage color and strongest flowering in full sun. Soil: Rich, well-drained soil that does not stay wet, especially in winter. Water: Moderate water during active growth, allow the top layer to dry slightly between waterings in containers. USDA Zones: USDA Zones 7 to 10 for in-ground overwintering, and grow as a summer bulb with indoor overwintering in colder zones. Spacing: Space about 18 to 24 inches apart to allow for a full clump and good airflow. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a focal point in a patio container where the dark foliage and pineapple flower spike read like living sculpture. Containers: Plant in large pots for a high-end tropical look that holds its shape through summer heat. Border Accent: Tuck into sunny borders to add bold foliage contrast and late-season vertical interest. Courtyard Gardens: Place in protected, warm spots where the plant can soak up sun and stay crisp and upright. Cut Flowers: Cut flowering stems for arrangements, as the spikes can last well in a vase. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Keep evenly moist while growing, then reduce watering as the season ends and growth slows. Feeding: Feed lightly in spring and early summer to support strong leaves and flowering, especially in containers. Staking: Staking is usually not needed, but very windy sites may benefit from a sheltered placement. Overwintering: In cold regions, lift bulbs after frost or store containers in a cool, frost-free place and keep soil barely dry. Cleanup: Remove spent flower stems and allow foliage to yellow naturally so the bulb can recharge. Why Choose Oakhurst Pineapple Lily? Bold Foliage: Deep burgundy leaves create instant contrast and make neighboring flowers look brighter. Late-Season Drama: Pineapple-like flower spikes add height and interest in midsummer to late summer. Heat Performance: Thrives in warm weather and keeps a clean, upright look through summer. Container Versatility: Easy to feature in pots, then overwinter to enjoy again next year. Design Impact: Strong structure and color make it an easy anchor for modern, tropical, and mixed plantings. If you want a summer plant that looks intentional from the moment it leafs out, Oakhurst Pineapple Lily delivers with foliage first and flowers second. Give it sun, drainage, and steady moisture during growth, and it will reward you with a dramatic spike and a polished, sculptural finish. It is especially effective when repeated in matching containers or used as a dark-leaved contrast in bright borders.
