The Myocastor coypus skull is a museum-quality polyurethane resin cast of California Academy of Sciences specimen. 2-part skull (separate cranium and mandible). 1:1 scale. Made in USA. The nutria, or coypu, is a large, plant-eating, water rodent from South America. They live in burrows near water and eat river plant stems. They are an invasive species in the United States. Fur farmers first brought them to North America, Europe, and Asia. People still hunt and trap them for fur in some areas. Their burrowing and eating habits cause conflict with humans. Nutria look like very large rats. They have a small, long skinny, hairless tail. Adults weigh 9 to 20 pounds, but usually average 10 to 15 pounds. Each nutria eats a massive amount of water vegetation. An individual eats about 25% of its body weight daily. They eat the base above-ground plant stems. They also dig through soil for roots and underground stems. They eat cattails, rushes, reeds, arrowheads, flatsedges, and cordgrasses. They also eat crops like grass, alfalfa, corn, rice, and sugarcane.
