Nut Lounge Chair

The Moooi Nut Lounge Chair is Marcel Wanders' answer to what happens when you take bent plywood and shape it into something that actually wants to hug you back. The solid oak construction gives it this substantial, quality feel that cheaper lounge chairs can't replicate, while the curved shell wraps around you in a way that feels protective without being confining. The proportions work really well - it's compact enough for smaller living rooms but still has the presence of a statement piece. What stands out is how Wanders handled the upholstery integration with those cushioned seat and back panels that sink into the wooden shell instead of just sitting on top of it. Available in various wood stains and upholstery options, so you can match it to your existing furniture or go bold with one of the more dramatic fabric choices. The comfort level is higher than you'd expect from something this sculptural. The curve of the backrest hits at just the right angle for reading or watching TV without needing to pile throw pillows behind you, and the seat depth accommodates different sitting positions without that awkward feeling where your legs dangle or you're slouching to reach the back support. The bent plywood construction means it's lighter than solid wood chairs, so repositioning it isn't a two-person job, but it still feels stable and well-anchored once you're sitting. The solid oak legs taper nicely and keep the overall profile from looking too bulky despite the enveloping shape. Pairs well with the matching Nut footstool if you want full lounging capability, though it works fine on its own too. Moooi operates out of the Netherlands with Marcel Wanders as co-founder and artistic director, which explains their catalog full of pieces that manage to be both artistic and actually comfortable to use daily. Wanders made his name with the Knotted Chair back in the '90s and has been designing furniture that walks the line between functional seating and sculptural objects ever since. The Nut collection reflects his approach of creating "environments of love" through design - which could sound pretentious but actually translates to furniture that feels good to be around and use regularly rather than just looking impressive in photos. Moooi's production quality backs up the design ambition, using proper construction methods and materials that hold up over years of use.
