Nugget Ninebark

Nugget Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius 'Nugget')Nugget Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius 'Nugget') is a tough deciduous shrub prized for its bright golden foliage and its durable, easy-care nature in a wide range of landscapes. Leaves emerge a vivid yellow in spring and hold strong color through the season, bringing consistent brightness to mixed borders and foundation plantings. In late spring to early summer, clusters of small white flowers add a soft bloom moment that contrasts nicely with the foliage. With its bold color and dependable structure, Nugget Ninebark makes a strong focal point where you want long-lasting foliage interest without high maintenance. Distinctive FeaturesThe standout feature is the saturated golden leaf color, which reads clearly from a distance and helps lift darker plantings. The multi-stem habit creates a full, natural look that works well in informal borders and screens, and the shrub can develop exfoliating bark on older stems for added texture when leaves drop. Nugget Ninebark is also valued for adaptability, handling cold, heat, and a range of soils once established. For the best color, give it good light and avoid overly rich, constantly wet sites. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to part shade; brightest foliage color typically develops with more sun. Soil: Adaptable; prefers well-drained soil but tolerates many soil types once established. Water: Moderate; water regularly during establishment, then during extended dry spells. USDA Hardiness Zones: 3 to 7. Habit: Multi-stem deciduous shrub with an upright to arching form. Mature Size: About 4 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a bright gold anchor where foliage can lift the color of an entire bed. Mixed Shrub Borders: Adds strong contrast among evergreens, purple foliage shrubs, and flowering plants. Foundation Planting: Provides season-long foliage color and a full, structured look. Screening: Works as part of an informal screen when spaced to overlap at maturity. Mass Planting: Plant in groups for a repeating band of golden color and a cohesive landscape effect. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Keep evenly watered the first growing season, then water during prolonged drought. Pruning: Prune after flowering or in late winter to shape, and remove a few older stems at the base to refresh growth. Color Management: Provide more sun for stronger golden foliage and denser branching. Fertilizing: Usually not needed; feed lightly in spring if growth is weak. Mulching: Mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weeds, keeping mulch off the base of stems. General Habit: Allow room for its natural arching form for the best overall look.
