Nouveau Testament 1814

6B New Testament. À Guernesey: C. G. Hamilton, 1812-1814. In French Notes Early French translations of scripture appeared during the Middle Ages, but the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century brought renewed efforts to make the Bible accessible to ordinary readers in their native language. Among the most influential was Jacques Lefèvre d’Étaples’ French translation of the New Testament, first published in 1523, followed by Pierre Robert Olivétan’s complete French Bible in 1535. These translations helped shape French Protestantism and encouraged personal engagement with scripture outside traditional Latin liturgy. Over the following centuries, French New Testaments were published in numerous editions, ranging from modest devotional volumes to finely bound works, reflecting the enduring importance of biblical literature in French religious and cultural history. The Bible has one of the richest and most influential publishing histories of any book, evolving from ancient handwritten scrolls and medieval illuminated manuscripts into the most widely distributed text in the world. For centuries, biblical manuscripts were painstakingly copied by scribes, often in Latin, Greek, or Hebrew, before Johannes Gutenberg revolutionized European book production with his famous Latin Bible, printed around 1455 using movable type. The Protestant Reformation accelerated the translation and printing of scripture in vernacular languages, including Martin Luther’s German New Testament (1522), William Tyndale’s English New Testament (1526), and the influential King James Bible (1611). Advances in printing technology during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries made Bibles increasingly affordable and accessible, while missionary organizations and Bible societies distributed translations throughout the world. From elaborate folio editions and illustrated family Bibles to compact pocket-sized volumes, the Bible’s remarkable publishing history reflects centuries of religious devotion, technological innovation, and profound cultural influence.
