Title: 1916 Robert E. Peary ALS on National Aerial Coast Patrol Commission Letterhead – PSA/DNA Certified (AP07525) Description: Presented here is an original Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) by famed Arctic explorer Rear Admiral Robert E. Peary, dated December 29, 1916, and written on official letterhead of the National Aerial Coast Patrol Commission, based at the U.S. Coast Survey Building in Washington, D.C. Peary, who chaired the Commission, penned this note to Thomas D. Neelands in acceptance of a social invitation and expressed his enthusiasm about meeting General Hughes. The letter reads: "My dear Mr. Neelands, I have your kind invitation of the 21st, & shall be glad to be with you Monday evening Jan. 8th to meet your distinguished countryman Gen. Hughes. With regards, I am Very sincerely, Peary" Historical Context: At the time of this letter, Peary was serving as Chairman of the National Aerial Coast Patrol Commission, an organization established to advocate for the advancement and integration of aviation in U.S. coastal defense during a period of global military tension and rapid aeronautical innovation. Peary’s transition from polar exploration to national defense leadership reflected the emerging importance of aviation in military planning just months before the U.S. entered World War I. Peary, who claimed to have reached the North Pole in 1909, remained a national hero and influential figure in matters of exploration and national preparedness. His reference to General Hughes—likely Charles Evans Hughes, former presidential candidate and future Chief Justice—adds an additional layer of historical depth, connecting prominent figures in military, political, and exploratory history in one concise correspondence. Authentication & Encapsulation: This letter has been authenticated by PSA/DNA, the premier name in autograph verification. It is accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity (LOA) with certification number AP07525. PSA confirms the authenticity of the signature based on handwriting analysis including pen pressure, slant, and flow, and the letter is pictured within the LOA for reference. Closing Appeal: A highly desirable piece of signed correspondence from Rear Admiral Robert E. Peary, this letter offers a rare glimpse into Peary's role in early aviation policy just before America’s entry into World War I. With its prominent military and political associations, elegant handwritten format, and PSA/DNA authentication, this letter is an exceptional addition for collectors of exploration, military aviation, or early 20th-century American history.
