Normalcy Was a Fantasy, by Ethan McKnight

Poetry, chapbook, 36 pages, from Bottlecap Features. Normalcy Was a Fantasy is a chapbook about the search for belonging in a world that demands conformity. Ethan McKnight writes with honesty and precision about the pressure to appear “normal,” the ache of wanting acceptance, and the realization that such a fantasy was never truly attainable. These poems explore mental health, loneliness, and faith with an unflinching eye, tracing what it means to live in the tension between how the world sees you and how you experience yourself. Rather than offering easy answers, McKnight’s work embraces the complexity of that struggle. His language shifts between stark confession and subtle lyricism, opening space for readers who have felt alien, out of place, or unseen. Normalcy Was a Fantasy is not about resolution but about recognition — a testament to the power of naming pain, and an invitation to find connection in the act of being honest. Ethan McKnight is a San Diego-based poet whose work draws from music, comics, and mental health struggles. His chapbook Recovery is Longer in a Dissolving Mind is out now from Bottlecap Press. His writing has appeared in Maudlin House, Punk Monk Press, The Literary Times, Ink and Marrow, and more. Find him on Instagram: @Gunnerman27.
