'Nitrogen In Use' Illuminated Sign

A rare piece of authentic factory and laboratory signage, this mid-century illuminated warning sign once served a working purpose — alerting personnel to the presence of nitrogen gas in an industrial, medical, or scientific setting. It now makes a great piece of art. Housed in its original riveted white metal lightbox frame, the sign's cream backlit panel is cut with bold red "NITROGEN IN USE" lettering designed to glow when powered, a graphic, no-nonsense expression of mid-century industrial design at its most utilitarian and honest. Pieces like this — pulled from decommissioned labs, hospitals, and manufacturing floors — have become increasingly sought after among collectors furnishing lofts, studios, and design-forward interiors with objects that carry real provenance and a story beyond decoration. The restrained cream-and-red palette and clean, stenciled typography sit comfortably alongside industrial furniture, science and technical ephemera, or as a singular graphic accent against a neutral wall.
