A trumpet emerges through granulating aqua and warm burnt orange, with rich darks and loose watercolor movement. This painting sat unfinished on my floor for a long time because it had promise, and I was worried I was going to screw it up. I am pleased to report that I didn’t and I love the way the colors came together. The reference photo was taken by a high school student at a marching band competition and gifted to me by a teacher at VMEA 2025. If you’ll be at VMEA 2026, turn on AirDrop, come find me, and give me more instruments to paint.
