New Testament with Elaborate Silver Binding

6B Bagster’s Narrow Edition of the New Testament. London: Samuel Bagster and Sons, Nineteenth-century edition of the Authorized King James Version of the New Testament. Notes Samuel Bagster established his London publishing firm in 1794 and became renowned for his specialized biblical publications, including polyglot Bibles and portable devotional editions. Distinguished by its unusually tall, slender proportions, the volume exemplifies the publisher’s reputation for producing compact and elegantly printed editions of Scripture. Although undated, this example is consistent with nineteenth-century production and reflects the period’s growing appreciation for religious books that combined practicality, craftsmanship, and beauty. The tradition of miniature and unusually proportioned biblical editions developed alongside advances in European printing and bookbinding, as publishers sought to make Scripture increasingly accessible for personal study, travel, and private devotion. By the nineteenth century, improvements in fine typography, thin paper, and precision printing enabled publishers to produce remarkably compact volumes while preserving the complete biblical text. These smaller editions required considerable technical skill, with tightly arranged type, carefully folded gatherings, and durable bindings designed to withstand frequent handling. This particular example is distinguished by its exceptionally elaborate silver metal binding, featuring richly ornamented covers with raised biblical scenes surrounded by intricate floral scrollwork and decorative flourishes. The upper cover depicts the Nativity with the Adoration of the Magi with the unique addition of a bound lamb as a symbol of the Christ child. Lower cover depicts the Annunciation where an angle swoops down in a pillowy cloud, lily in hand, to greet Mary. Angel on the spine holding a cross. The detailed relief work, ornamental borders, hinged construction, and surviving clasp demonstrate the artistry associated with decorative metal bookbindings, which became particularly desirable as devotional treasures and presentation gifts during the nineteenth century. Such bindings transformed sacred texts into objects of both religious significance and decorative craftsmanship, reflecting the reverence with which personal Scriptures were often regarded. The combination of Bagster’s distinctive narrow-format printing and this richly worked metal covering makes the volume an especially attractive example of nineteenth-century religious bookmaking and an evocative artifact of Victorian devotional culture. Notes Ornate silver binding with scene of the Nativity and Adoration of the Magi on the upper board and Annunciation on the lower board with an angel to the spine. Clasps still present and functional. Debossed edges. Silk endpapers. Housed in custom navy leather clamshell box. Very fine condition.
