Nervine

Research: Valerian Root: Supporting Nervous System Balance Historical Use: Valerian root (Valeriana officinalis) has been used for centuries in traditional herbal practices, with references dating back to Greek physicians like Dioscorides and Galen. It has a long-standing reputation for supporting a healthy nervous system and promoting emotional balance. Mood and Nervous System Support: Valerian is often associated with maintaining a calm and balanced mood. Its bioactive components, such as valerenic acid and iridoids (including valepotriates), are thought to interact with the body’s natural processes to support the nervous system. Mechanism of Action: Research suggests that valerian may influence gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) activity, a neurotransmitter involved in regulating mood and nervous system responses. By supporting GABA availability in the central nervous system, valerian root is thought to help maintain a healthy equilibrium during times of restlessness. Additional studies are ongoing to further explore these mechanisms and their potential benefits. St. John’s Wort: Supporting a Healthy Nervous System Historical Significance: St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a flowering plant with a long history of use in traditional herbal practices. Widely utilized in Europe, it is often included in formulations aimed at promoting nervous system balance and maintaining a healthy mood. Key Active Compounds: The primary active compounds in St. John’s Wort, hypericin and pseudohypericin, are thought to support the nervous system by influencing the body's natural processes related to neurotransmitter levels. These compounds may play a role in the regulation of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, which are associated with mood and emotional balance. Additional Bioactive Components: Recent studies suggest that hyperforin and adhyperforin, additional compounds found in St. John’s Wort, may also contribute to its effects. These components are believed to interact with chemical messengers in the nervous system, supporting mood stability and maintaining a sense of balance during periods of emotional fluctuation. Further research is ongoing to better understand the mechanisms of these compounds. Skullcap: Supporting Nervous System Health Historical Use and Traditional Value: Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) has a long history of use as a herbal supplement traditionally associated with healthy nervous system function support. It was often regarded as a nervine herb. Nervines are commonly used in herbal practices to promote balance and relaxation within the body. Antioxidant Properties: Skullcap contains bioactive compounds, including flavonoids and antioxidants, that may play a role in supporting cellular health. These compounds are studied for their potential to help neutralize free radicals, which are naturally occurring molecules that can contribute to oxidative stress. Supporting Central Nervous System Balance: Oxidative stress, an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants, is thought to impact various bodily functions, including those related to the nervous system. By providing antioxidant support, Skullcap is traditionally associated with promoting restfulness and overall nervous system health. Further research is ongoing to better understand its full range of benefits.   The information provided above is for educational purposes only and does not pertain to the performance or intended use of any specific products featured on this website. *These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Nervines are a category of herbs traditionally used to support and nourish the nervous system. According to herbal references, nervines are thought to promote balance and relaxation within the body, helping to maintain a calm and steady state during occasional bouts of stress. Commonly included in this group are herbs like skullcap, oat tops, catnip, chamomile, valerian root, hops, and St. John’s Wort. Each of these plants has a long history in traditional practices for their association with supporting the body’s natural ability to manage stress and maintain nervous system function. Nervines are frequently included in herbal supplement formulations aimed at promoting general relaxation and supporting a healthy nervous system. While research continues to explore their specific properties, nervines remain a popular choice for those seeking balance and well-being in their daily lives. Health Information: What Is the Nervous System? The nervous system is a complex network that includes the Central Nervous System (CNS), consisting of the brain and spinal cord, and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS), which includes nerves and nerve endings throughout the body. Together, they regulate essential life functions such as heartbeat, breathing, movement, memory, and cognitive processing. The nervous system can be likened to a computer’s wiring system. Signals from external stimuli travel through the peripheral nerves to the CNS, which then processes the information and generates a response. For example, when your hand touches a hot surface, sensory signals are sent to the brain, prompting an immediate response to withdraw your hand. This communication relies on electrical currents that pass through the nerves, carrying information to and from the brain and spinal cord. Micronutrients such as calcium, potassium, B vitamins, and vitamin E are integral to maintaining a healthy nervous system. These nutrients support the transmission of signals and ensure efficient communication within the body.
