Nerve Plant

Nerve Plant (Fittonia albivenis)Nerve Plant is a compact houseplant grown for high-contrast veining that adds color and detail in small spaces. It stays low and spreads gently, making it ideal for desktops, dish gardens, and bright rooms where you want a finished look without a large footprint. When it gets a little dry it will dramatically wilt, then perk back up after watering, which helps you learn its rhythm quickly. Give it bright, filtered light and steady moisture, and it will form a dense, patterned carpet of foliage. Distinctive FeaturesThis low-growing tropical perennial has oval leaves marked with bold netted veins that can be white, pink, or red depending on the selection. Stems creep and root as they spread, creating a full mat-like habit that works especially well in enclosed or humid displays. Small, pale flower spikes can appear, but blooms are usually minor and are uncommon indoors, so the foliage is the main show. Indoors it typically stays about 3 to 8 inches tall while spreading 12 to 18 inches wide over time. Growing Conditions Sun: Bright, indirect light is best, and avoid harsh direct sun that can scorch leaves and fade veining. Soil: Use a light, well-drained mix that holds some moisture, such as an airy indoor potting blend with perlite. Water: Keep soil evenly moist, watering when the surface begins to dry, and do not let the pot sit in standing water. USDA Zones: USDA Zones 11 to 12 outdoors, and elsewhere grown as a houseplant. Temperature: Prefers warm, stable conditions and should be protected from cold drafts and temperatures below about 60 F. Humidity: Moderate to high humidity helps prevent crispy edges and supports fuller growth, especially in winter. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use in a shallow bowl or decorative pot on a tabletop where the veined foliage can read as a patterned centerpiece. Terrariums: Plant in warm, humid enclosures where it stays lush, spreads evenly, and keeps leaf edges clean. Dish Gardens: Add as a low, spreading layer that fills gaps and makes mixed containers look finished. Bright Shelves: Place near bright filtered light to highlight leaf veining and keep growth compact. Groundcover Effect Indoors: Let it trail across the soil surface in larger pots to create a dense green carpet under taller plants. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Do not let it dry for long periods, because drought stress can cause wilting and leaf drop. Feeding: Feed lightly in spring and summer with a diluted, balanced houseplant fertilizer to support steady growth. Pinching: Pinch stem tips to encourage branching and a fuller, more even spread. Grooming: Remove any tired leaves and trim leggy stems to keep the plant dense and tidy. Repotting: Refresh the mix and repot when crowded, choosing a wider pot if you want more spread. Why Choose Nerve Plant? Patterned Foliage: Net-like veining adds color and detail that stands out among typical green houseplants. Compact Size: Stays small and spreading, making it easy to use in tight spaces and small containers. Fast Styling Payoff: Fills in quickly to create a lush, finished look on tabletops and shelves. Terrarium Friendly: Loves humidity, making it an excellent performer in enclosed displays and dish gardens. Easy to Shape: Responds well to pinching and trimming so you can keep it dense and low. If you want a small plant that makes a big design difference up close, Nerve Plant is a strong choice. Keep it in bright, indirect light with consistent moisture and a well-drained mix. With a little humidity and regular pinching, it will stay compact, full, and richly patterned.
