Neoseiulus californicus | Generalist that Tolerates High Heats

Spider Mite & Broad Mite Control Two-spotted spider mites and their relatives can strip a plant of its color before you ever spot the stippling, and hot, dry stretches only speed up the damage. Neoseiulus californicus is one of the most heat-tolerant predatory mites available, built to keep working through summer conditions that slow other spider mite predators down. Ideal for gardens, greenhouses, and grow spaces that run hot and on the drier side, californicus is widely used in biological pest control and IPM programs targeting a broad range of pest mite species. What Are Predatory Mites? Neoseiulus californicus is an affordable, generalist predatory mite that holds up in conditions where many other predatory mites start to struggle. It tends to perform especially well in lower-humidity environments (40–60% RH) compared to other predatory mite species, while still tolerating a wide temperature range. As a Type II generalist, californicus can sustain itself on pollen when pest populations are low, a flexibility Type I specialists like persimilis don't have. What Pests do Californicus Mites Target? Targets two-spotted spider mites, Persea ("avocado") mites, carmine mites, Lewis mites, Banks grass mite, broad mites, cyclamen mites, European/citrus red mites, russet mites, and many other pest mite species. How It Works Californicus predators are identified by their eight legs and a buff-to-tan, pear-shaped body measuring approximately 1mm. Females lay oval-shaped, translucent eggs beneath leaves near pest populations. Within 7–14 days, eggs hatch into larvae with three pairs of legs, ready to consume spider mite eggs. Moving through two nymphal stages, they progress to targeting larger spider mite nymphs until reaching adulthood. Adults will sustain themselves on pollen when pest populations run low. Fallacis vs. Californicus Both are Neoseiulus species and both are Type II generalists, but they split along humidity preference rather than temperature: Neoseiulus fallacis: prefers higher humidity (55–90% RH), cold-active, catches pests while they're still in winter dormancy Neoseiulus californicus: tolerates a wider humidity range but performs best at the lower end (40–60% RH), stronger fit for hot, dry conditions If your growing environment runs humid, fallacis is the better cold-season fit; if it runs dry and hot, californicus takes over. When to Use Californicus Mites Californicus works well both preventively and against active infestations. Its tolerance for heat and lower humidity makes it a strong pick for outdoor gardens in summer, dry greenhouses, or grow rooms where more humidity-dependent predators would stall out. Choosing Your Release Method Bottled Predators — Active Infestations High percentage of hungry adults for immediate impact Suited to knocking down populations that have already taken hold Works indoors or out — houseplants, gardens, greenhouses, and larger growing operations Re-introduce weekly or every other week as needed Slow-Release Sachets — Prevention & Maintenance Packed with all life stages for a steady flow of predators for 2-4 weeks Low-effort way to maintain standing protection between active treatments Hang and let it work, no repeated handling for weeks at a time Application Rates These are general starting points — actual application should be adjusted based on pest species, plant type, and infestation severity. Monitor pest and predator populations regularly to gauge how well the program is working. Bottled Mite Release Application Rate Frequency  Light Infestation 0.5-2 mites per sq. ft. Weekly or bi-weekly Heavy Infestation 2-4 mites per sq. ft. Weekly or bi-weekly   Sachet Release Application Rate Frequency  Plants Touching 1 sachet per 3-6 sq. ft. Every 2-4 weeks Plants Not Touching 1 sachet per plant Every 2-4 weeks Temperature & Humidity Range Effective range: 50°F – 104°F Humidity: 40-80% Application Instructions Bottled Release: Release early morning, evening, or when grow lights are off Knock down any webbing on infested foliage first Mist leaves lightly before releasing predators Sprinkle bottle contents directly onto plants, or use hanging boxes to keep predators concentrated in target zones. Leave the open container in place for 72 hours so any remaining predators can disperse Repeat every one to two weeks until the infestation is under control Sachet Release: Choose plants where you want standing protection Hang the sachet out of direct sunlight Replace every 2–4 weeks; don't let sachets dry out completely, since prolonged dampness can also encourage fungal growth Pairing for Full-Spectrum Mite Control Swirskii favors warmer conditions, while Amblyseius cucumeris performs best in cooler environments — many growers use both for year-round thrips coverage. For heavy thrips infestations needing faster knockdown, pairing swirskii with Orius insidiosus adds a quicker-acting predator alongside swirskii's sustained release. Safe, Sustainable Pest Management 100% natural — no chemical residue Safe around people and pets Safe for use on edible crops Fits seamlessly into existing IPM programs Requires no protective equipment Storage For best results, release immediately upon arrival. If short-term storage is unavoidable, keep at 45–55°F for no more than 24 hours, out of direct sunlight. Never freeze.
