Rinse treated surfaces thoroughly with water after use Frequently Asked Questions About Muriatic Acid 1. How much muriatic acid should I add to lower my pool’s pH? Always test your pool water first to determine the current pH level. As a general rule, add 1 quart of muriatic acid per 15,000 gallons of pool water to lower pH by approximately 0.2 points. Add the acid slowly around the pool’s perimeter while the pump is running. Wait at least 4 hours before retesting. Never add more than 1 quart per 15,000 gallons at a time. 2. Can I use muriatic acid to clean pool tiles? Yes, muriatic acid can effectively clean calcium deposits from pool tiles, but it must be diluted properly. Mix 1 part acid to 4 parts water. Always add acid to water, never water to acid. Apply the solution carefully to the tiles above the waterline using acid-resistant brushes or rollers. Rinse thoroughly with water after cleaning. Due to the strength of the acid, consider trying milder solutions first, and always perform a test on a small area. 3. How long should I wait to swim after adding muriatic acid to the pool? Wait at least 30 minutes after adding muriatic acid before swimming, but ideally wait 4 hours to allow the acid to fully mix with the pool water and for pH levels to stabilize. Always test the water chemistry before resuming swimming to ensure pH and other chemical levels are in the proper range. Never swim while actively adding any chemicals to the pool.
