'Munchkin' Oakleaf Hydrangea

Good things come in small packages, they say - and 'Munchkin' oakleaf hydrangea serves as the perfect example! It's the smallest version of our fabulous native oakleaf hydrangea on the market, reaching just 3' tall and wide, a tiny fraction of the epic proportions it can reach in nature. This makes it absolutely ideal for small spaces or anywhere you want the beauty of an oakleaf hydrangea but need something smaller-scale. Despite its diminutive size, it doesn't skimp on the display, as it is covered with big cone-shaped summer blooms that develop a ruby tone come autumn, and of course, has the same fabulous fall color you expect from oakleaf hydrangeas. What makes 'Munchkin' different from other oakleaf hydrangeas? The smallest variety on the market Grows with a dense, round habit, like a little tuffett Details: Name: Hydrangea quercifolia 'Munchkin' Hardiness: USDA zones 5-9 Height + Width: 3-4' Light: Full to part sun Soil: Any well-drained soil will do. Some drought tolerance on established plants. Pruning: Blooms on old wood; oakleaf hydrangeas can be selectively pruned as needed to accentuate their branching or habit. Fertilizer: Fertilize once in early spring with a rose fertilizer if desired. Bloom time: Summer Bloom color: Flowers start white and take on pink and red tones in late summer/autumn. Uses: 'Munchkin' makes an outstanding specimen plant, or position a group of three or five of them through your landscape. Very nice addition to woodland or native plant gardens.
