Mulberry White

White Mulberry is a fast-growing, extremely hardy deciduous tree native to eastern Asia. Historically famous as the primary food source for silkworms (Bombyx mori) in traditional silk production, it is widely grown today in home orchards and food forests for its heavy crops of sweet fruit, broad shade canopy, and adaptability. The tree features bright glossy green foliage with leaves that vary wildly in shape on the same tree—ranging from simple heart-shaped leaves to deeply lobed forms. Typically, the growth of a White Mulberry is rapid and can reach 30 to 50 feet tall with a wide, spreading canopy (though easily managed at 10–15 feet with pruning). The White Mulberry produces abundant clusters of 1/2- to 1-inch-long berries. Unlike dark mulberries, true white mulberries lack tart acidity, giving them a mild, honey-sweet flavor profile. Fruit color at maturity ranges from cream/white to pale pink or lavender (and occasionally dark purple). The White Mulberry is a highly prolific bearer starting at a young age (2–3 years). A single mature tree can yield 100 to 300+ pounds of fruit, ripening continuously across a 4-to-6-week window from late spring into early summer.  Scientific Name Morus alba (White Mulberry) Foliage: Deciduous Leaves: Highly variable (polymorphic); 3–7 inches long, bright glossy green; can be unlobed, 2-lobed, or multi-lobed with serrated margins; turns yellow in fall Flowers: Inconspicuous, small greenish catkins appearing in early spring alongside new leaves Fruit: Multiple fruit (blackberry-like shape), 0.5–1 inch long; ripens from white/cream to pale pink, lavender, or dark purple (depending on variety); sweet, honey-like flavor with low acidity Seeds: Tiny, soft edible achenes embedded within the fleshy fruitlets Bark: Smooth and light orange-brown on young stems, becoming thick, rough, deeply furrowed, and dark grayish-brown on mature trunks Life Span: Perennial 75–150+ years Mature Height 30–50 ft (can be kept significantly smaller, 10–15 ft, through regular coppicing/pruning) Mature Width (Spread) 30–40 ft Growth Rate Fast (can grow 3–6 ft per year when young) USDA Zone / Chill Hours Zones 4–9; Requires 200–500 chill hours PLANT CARE & CHARACTERISTICS Light Requirements: Full Sun to Partial Shade (Full sun yields highest fruit production and sweetest flavor). Water Requirements: Moderate; regular watering while establishing; highly self-sufficient once rooted. Drought Resistance: High once fully established. Soil Type: Adaptable to nearly any well-draining soil (clay, loam, sand, alkaline, or acidic); prefers pH 6.0–7.5. Deer Resistance: Moderate (Deer may browse young lower foliage, but mature trees grow well above browse line). Pest / Disease Resistance: Exceptionally hardy; resistant to most pests; occasionally susceptible to Popcorn Disease (Ciboria carunculoides) or Root Rot in waterlogged soil. Pollination: Self-fertile (Monoecious/Wind-pollinated); sets heavy crops independently without needing a second tree. Harvest: Late Spring to Early Summer (May through July); fruit ripens continuously over a 4–6 week period. Yield: Extremely Heavy / Prolific. Mature trees produce 100–300+ lbs (several bushels) of fruit annually; begins fruiting at 2–3 years old. Storage / Shelf Life: Very short fresh shelf life (1–3 days in refrigeration); best eaten immediately, dried, frozen, or made into preserves/wine. Pruning: Prune while dormant in late winter to manage height, clear dead wood, or shape canopy. Caution: Cuts bleed milky white latex sap. Avoid heavy summer pruning as it reduces the following spring's crop.
