Mr. Mustard® False Spiraea

A Shrub That Puts on a Show Before the First Flower Opens Most flowering shrubs keep you waiting until bloom time to earn their place in the garden. Sorbaria sorbifolia 'SMNSSC', sold as Mr. Mustard® False Spiraea, starts its performance the moment new leaves push out in early spring. The emerging foliage is a swirling blend of yellow, orange, red, pink, and lime green, vivid enough to stop you in your tracks. It is the kind of spring color you usually have to plant a dozen tulip bulbs to achieve, and this shrub delivers it all on its own, year after year. As temperatures warm and the season shifts into summer, that kaleidoscope of color settles into a clean, bright kelly green. That is when the flowers take over. Soft, feathery plumes of creamy white blooms rise above the foliage, looking very much like oversized astilbe flowers. They sway gently in a summer breeze, catching light and attracting bees, butterflies, and the occasional hummingbird from early through late summer. Compact Size, Tough as Nails Character What sets Mr. Mustard® apart from the straight species of False Spiraea is its size. The common species can muscle its way to 10 feet tall and wide, crowding out everything around it. This Proven Winners® selection stays a manageable 2 to 3 feet tall with a spread of 3 to 4 feet, making it genuinely useful in modern gardens where space is limited. It is also one of the hardiest flowering shrubs available, rated to zone 2, so gardeners in Minnesota, Montana, and the Upper Midwest who struggle to find ornamental shrubs that survive the coldest winters will find a reliable ally here. Mr. Mustard® is also rated for low flammability, a practical consideration for gardeners in fire-prone areas who want attractive landscaping that contributes to a defensible space. Landscape Uses This shrub shines in mass plantings along slopes or embankments, where its spreading, suckering habit actually works in your favor for erosion control. It makes a low, flowing hedge along a border edge, a groundcover-style planting under tall trees in part shade, or a colorful anchor in a mixed shrub border. Plant it in groups of three or five for a dramatic spring foliage display, or use a single specimen as a bold accent in a cottage or informal garden. Just keep a spade handy to manage suckers if you want to maintain a tidy mounded shape rather than a spreading colony. Why This Cultivar, Not the Species The species Sorbaria sorbifolia has a well-earned reputation for spreading aggressively, and it has naturalized in parts of the northeastern U.S. Mr. Mustard® is a compact, patented selection that is far better behaved at roughly one-fifth the size of the species. It gives you all the ornamental appeal, including the show-stopping spring color and summer blooms, without the management headache. For gardeners who want the look without the work, this is the cultivar to choose.
