Mr. Bowling Ball Arborvitae

Mr. Bowling Ball Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis 'Bobozam')Mr. Bowling Ball Arborvitae is a compact evergreen that keeps a naturally round shape, so your beds look clean and finished without constant trimming. Its dense green texture adds year-round structure in small spaces where larger conifers would feel too heavy. This is an easy choice for foundations and front borders when you want a reliable, low profile plant that still looks intentional in every season. Give it decent sun and consistent moisture, and it becomes a steady evergreen anchor that works with almost any style. Distinctive FeaturesThis dwarf arborvitae forms a tight, globe-shaped mound with fine, feathery, scale-like sprays that stay dense from edge to edge. Foliage is typically rich green through the growing season and can show some bronzing in winter, especially in exposed sites. It grows slowly and usually matures around 2 to 3 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, holding a rounded silhouette with little to no pruning. The overall effect is a neat evergreen ball that brings texture and order to the landscape. Growing Conditions Sun: Full sun to part shade, with best density in brighter light. Soil: Average, well-drained soil is best, and it prefers soil that stays evenly moist rather than dry. Water: Water regularly during establishment, then water deeply during extended dry periods to prevent stress and thinning. USDA Zones: 3 to 7. Airflow: Give it a little breathing room to keep the foliage healthy and looking its best. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use one plant as a low evergreen focal point to anchor the front of a bed with a crisp, round silhouette. Foundation Planting: Place along foundations where the compact size keeps windows and walkways clear. Edging: Repeat in a line to create a tidy evergreen border with consistent shape and texture. Rock Gardens: Tuck among stone and gravel where a dense mound form looks natural and intentional. Containers: Feature in pots for year-round structure on patios and entries, especially when planted in a well-drained mix. Low Maintenance Care Pruning: Little pruning is needed, and light touch-ups are best in late spring if you want a sharper outline. Mulching: Mulch over the root zone to hold moisture and buffer temperature swings, keeping mulch a few inches off the stems. Watering: Keep moisture steady in the first couple of seasons, then watch closely in heat since dry soil can cause stress. Fertilizing: Feed lightly in spring only if growth is weak, using a slow-release evergreen fertilizer according to label directions. Pest Check: Watch for bagworms and treat early if you see hanging cases or chewed foliage. Why Choose Mr. Bowling Ball Arborvitae? Natural Globe Shape: Stays rounded without frequent shearing, so it looks designed with minimal effort. Compact Size: Fits small beds and tight spaces while still providing evergreen structure. Four-Season Texture: Dense sprays add soft detail and steady green presence through the year. Easy to Repeat: Works well in groups for a clean, consistent pattern in formal or casual designs. Small-Space Versatility: Performs well in foundations, borders, and containers when given sun and reliable moisture. If you want a compact evergreen that stays neat and dependable, Mr. Bowling Ball Arborvitae is a strong pick. Give it sun for the best density, keep the soil from drying out completely, and it will hold a tidy rounded form with little intervention. It looks great as a single accent, but it is even better repeated for a calm, structured border. In areas with deer pressure, plan on protection since arborvitae can be browsed, especially in winter.
