Mouthbrooder Severum

Mouthbrooder Severum (Heros sp.) The Mouthbrooder Severum is a rare and captivating South American cichlid that stands apart from traditional severums due to its extraordinary reproductive behavior. Rather than laying eggs on a flat surface and guarding them externally, the male—or in some populations, both parents—incubates the eggs and newly hatched fry inside the mouth until they are ready to swim independently. This remarkable adaptation makes the species one of the most interesting cichlids to observe in the aquarium. Juveniles display attractive earthy brown and olive tones with reddish-orange coloration developing across the lower body. As they mature, adults develop stronger patterning, metallic highlights, and vibrant red-orange hues on the belly while maintaining the distinctive body shape and intelligence severums are known for. Mouthbrooder Severums are generally more peaceful than many other large cichlids and do well in spacious aquariums with driftwood, rockwork, and open swimming areas. They are naturally curious fish that quickly learn to recognize their owners and often become interactive during feeding. An omnivorous diet consisting of high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen foods, and occasional vegetables will help maintain their health and enhance their natural coloration. Clean, warm water with regular maintenance is essential for long-term success. Whether you’re looking for a unique display fish or hope to witness one of nature’s most fascinating forms of parental care, the Mouthbrooder Severum is an outstanding addition to any South American cichlid collection.
