Mount Gay Eclipse Rum 1.75L

Mount Gay Eclipse Rum 1.75L is a Barbadian gold rum bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof) in a large-format 1.75-liter handle. Produced at the world's oldest documented rum distillery — with a surviving deed dating to 1703 — Eclipse earned a Gold Medal at the 2025 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, reinforcing its standing as one of the most reliable gold rums on the market. Quick Facts: ABV: 40%  |  Origin: Barbados  |  Aged Up to 2 Years  |  Distillery: Mount Gay Distillery (est. 1703) Production & Heritage Mount Gay Distillery sits on the northern tip of Barbados in the parish of St. Lucy, where it has been producing rum continuously for over three centuries. Eclipse is double distilled using a blend of traditional copper pot stills and column stills, starting from locally sourced molasses that is fermented in oak vats — an older practice most distilleries have abandoned in favor of stainless steel. The distillate is aged for up to two years in charred American white oak ex-bourbon barrels from Kentucky, and the distillery draws its process water from a nearly 250-foot-deep well, naturally filtered through the island's coral limestone aquifer. This combination of pot-and-column blending, oak-vat fermentation, and coral-filtered water gives Eclipse a character that reflects both Barbadian terroir and centuries of accumulated craft. Tasting Notes Aroma: The nose opens with an initial brightness before settling into rounded notes of fresh flowers and honey. Deeper inhalation reveals vanilla, milk chocolate, and a gentle waft of tropical fruit. Taste: On the palate, ripe banana and apricot arrive first, moving through a mid-palate layered with light caramel and toasted almond. A thread of subtle smokiness weaves through the center, balanced by soft oak spice and a well-integrated sweetness that never becomes cloying. Finish: The finish is medium in length with a smooth, lightly woody close. Lingering traces of vanilla and warm spice fade gradually, leaving a clean and dry impression. How to Drink Mount Gay Eclipse Eclipse is approachable enough to sip neat or over a single large ice cube, where the barrel influence and fruit character come through clearly. Its real versatility, however, shines in mixed drinks. A Rum Punch benefits from Eclipse's fruit-forward backbone, which holds up against citrus and grenadine without disappearing. In a Dark 'n' Stormy, the subtle smokiness and vanilla complement ginger beer's spice for a balanced, refreshing serve. A classic Daiquiri built with Eclipse gains more depth than lighter rums provide, adding toasted-oak dimension to the lime-and-sugar framework. Best For Stocking a home bar for regular cocktail mixing at volume Hosting summer gatherings and batch-making rum punches Everyday sipping rum for those who appreciate Barbadian tradition Introducing someone new to aged gold rums with an accessible entry point Frequently Asked Questions What does Mount Gay Eclipse taste like? Mount Gay Eclipse delivers ripe banana, apricot, and vanilla up front, followed by toasted almond, light caramel, and a subtle smokiness. The overall profile is fruity, balanced, and smooth with gentle oak influence. How does Mount Gay Eclipse compare to Bacardi Gold? Both are widely available gold rums at 40% ABV, but Eclipse uses a blend of copper pot and column still distillate aged in ex-bourbon barrels, which gives it more depth and a noticeable smoky undertone that Bacardi Gold, a predominantly column-still rum, does not share. Eclipse also carries the heritage of Barbadian rum-making traditions dating to 1703, while Bacardi Gold draws on a lighter Puerto Rican or regional style. Is Mount Gay Eclipse good for cocktails? Eclipse is widely regarded as one of the best value gold rums for cocktails because its pot-still character and barrel aging give it enough body to stand up in mixed drinks without overwhelming other ingredients. Where is Mount Gay Eclipse made? Mount Gay Eclipse is produced at the Mount Gay Distillery in the parish of St. Lucy on the northern tip of Barbados. The distillery has operated on the same site since at least 1703, making it the oldest documented rum-producing operation in the world. What foods pair well with Mount Gay Eclipse? Jerk chicken benefits from Eclipse's smoky-sweet character matching the spice. Grilled pineapple or tropical fruit desserts echo the rum's banana and apricot notes. Dark chocolate truffles complement the cocoa tones on the nose. Coconut shrimp pairs well, as the rum's vanilla and oak balance the richness. Aged cheddar or Gouda creates a satisfying contrast with the rum's sweetness and toasted-barrel quality. What sizes does Mount Gay Eclipse come in? Mount Gay Eclipse is available in a standard 750ml bottle as well as the 1.75L handle size, which is the format featured here and a practical choice for high-volume use. Is Mount Gay Eclipse worth the price? Eclipse positions as an entry-level expression within the Mount Gay range and competes at the affordable end of the aged gold rum category. Its 2025 SFWSC Gold Medal and centuries-old production pedigree offer strong value relative to similarly priced competitors. Why Mount Gay Eclipse? Few rums at this price tier carry a Gold Medal from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition alongside a provenance that stretches back over 320 years. The combination of copper pot and column still distillation, oak-vat fermentation, and coral-limestone-filtered water creates a layered gold rum that outperforms many bottles in its class. Eclipse occupies a specific niche — an honest, well-made Barbadian rum with enough complexity for neat sipping and enough mixability for daily cocktail duty. In a category crowded with bland, column-still-only competitors, that dual-still heritage and barrel-aging program give Eclipse a clear edge.
